Been curious about this, during the re-enactments, if all are preparing their own rounds, how do people verify that they are not going to get shot by some dip wad that accidentally lets a round with ball into the lot. I would not want to be on the recieving end of someone's accident

I hope you mean 75 grains
I've never used paper. I pre-measure into plastic vials. Very useful since I hunt, often in snow and rain. Keep my caps in a plastic tube also, the tin is just the right size for pre-lubed patches... Yeah, I'm weird, other than the powder measure everything is homemade, including the gun.

Never used caps with petals like that. What good are those for?
I pinch my caps before forcing them onto the nippple, they don't fall off for nothing. Seems those petals would make doing that difficult.

not too familiar with black powder, "pinch" with fingers? How much force does it take to set them off? No chance of setting one off with a pinch?

That's a pretty substantial amount of explosives you'll be carrying :seasix:
Seems there are a few folks who aren't up to date on primitive/early firearms, a step by step pictorial would be good :seasix:

Some people have live fired their guns before with a small slither of lead remaining in the barrel. A couple of people have really been wounded at reenactments before. Never intentionally, but it has happened. Even a small rock, stick, etc...could become a projectile. We do numerous safety inspections and trust all others have properly cleaned their muskets prior to formation.

:yesnod::D We try and do it as authentic as possible. These German made caps are the best. They have four wings (petals). We had a problem a couple of years ago with some other caps (five wing) like sold at Wal-Mart. A few people got hurt by the wings breaking loose and flying thru the air. I was hit dead in the eye by one. It felt like someone walked up and punched me in the eye. I was lucky it didn't embed, scratch or cut my eye. During the safety inspections now, those caps are no longer allowed. We also do a little pinch to keep the cap on the nipple. We keep them in a period looking leather cap patch worn on the belt.

No, it is some chemical (the green stuff you see in there). The musket hammer strikes the cap and a spark(s) goes through the nipple into a tiny hole in the barrel to ignite the black powder.

They're not too sensitive, never had one go off by accident. I pinch the cap walls to make them oval, slide them on by hand and then firmly seat them by pulling the trigger and pushing on the back of the hammer with my thumb. Only way to get them off without firing is to peel them with a knife.

Moisture wicks up inside a cap through a capillary effect. A tight seal can prevent this. Moisture is death to primer caps. A single rain drop or flake of snow melted onto a cap and your gun can go click instead of boom. That's a really bad thing after freezing your butt off for week waiting for a chance to shoot a deer
GG, where do you do these reenactments? I'd love to check it out sometime.

Years ago I had looked at a couple of "carbine" type cap & ball rifles, they were .58 cal. I thought "holy crap, thats a big round" do they still make those? Most of the stuff I have seen recently (although I don't do extensive searches) is about .50 at the biggest.

I know you're striving for realism, but you don't need to be missing an arm to be realistic.
Styrofoam is probably one of the most dangerous things you can get near gunpowder or sensitive electronic components. If you have ever had foam peanuts stick to you hands from static electricity you know what I mean.

The 58 is still sold and used. They do make bigger :D The Brown Bess of the Revolutionary war was a 75 caliber flintlock rifle. I really wanted one of those when I was younger.
Only muzzle loading rifle I've used is 50 cal though. My double barrel smoothbore shoots a 64 caliber roundball (basically a 13 guage shotgun). I use #2 shot on jack rabbits. Works great, although you do have to wait for the smoke to clear to find out if you missed or not

I carry a model 1842 .69 cal. Springfield. Mine is a smoothbore, although they make a rifled barrel too. It is a bit longer and heavier than a .58 Enfield. One of the most common muskets for both sides.

Here are some original bullets from my collection that I have dug over the years. During the war, bullets ranged from the .22 cal. range up to the .72 cal. Many .69 cal. were used along with the .58 cal. but, also, pistol bullets, round balls, Confed. specific bullets, cleaner bullets, etc...Many would carve the bullets into different shapes while in camp or bored. Chess pieces, game chips, nipple protectors, etc...I found one carved like a shoe.

Some 33 years ago, I had a CW rifle dug up from 'near' Gettysburg found with a metal detector, the trigger/guard and stock plate and of course the barrel were still there, the stock had most of the finish gone, some small spots remained, on the upper right of the stock, just on the opposite side of the cheek plate was imbedded a piece of lead, blown into the side like shrapnel or maybe portion of a bullet? the wood was split the barrel was bent as in bowed to one side....it was found under the remains of a long ago fallen tree.....
I got it from a guy for next to nothing, and gave it up for near the same....
but it told a hell of a tale....
:sadangel::shots:
some years ago I had a genuine Revolutionary War Musket.....sold it years ago....

I fired three rounds last week. Here is one of the used caps still on it. The flash magnified the rust color appearance. You can't see it in person.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f229/jerryholmes/IMG_4429.jpg
Nipple removed and the hole is visible to the left going into the barrel. Three rounds and you can already see how the powder is accumulating.

Nipple, fired percussion cap (4 wing), and the nipple tool.

A quarter is just a tad bit larger than the barrel. My focus point was on the barrel, so the .25 piece is blurred.

Wood box or paper bag. We carry about 40 + rounds into battle in our cartridge box. Cartridge box is made of leather and can be attached to the belt or over the shoulder via a leather strap. It has a flap on it to keep everything inside covered. These and everything else are dead on to the originals. It would be a bad day if 40 rounds went off on your hip.
We have a couple of people that went to school with you.
