View Full Version : Ok...got a new toy.
Last weekend I pulled the trigger on a Nikon D5100/18-55mm/55-300mm telephoto. No I need to figure out how to use the darn thing. Let the games begin.
Well first you open the box.... :D
Damn.. that was the step I was missing. Thanks.

:yesnod: Don't use those green presets.
Ok seriously, read the instruction manual. I know people don't like to do that, but make yourself. Then go out and use it, a lot. Keep the manual with you for reference/questions.
It will make learning how your new camera works much better and more enjoyable in the long run.
Just my .02 FWIW.
There is a class offered by a local photo store on just using the D5100. I think I will start by signing up with that. and yes, I am reading the heck out of the manual.

Holy crap ! Last weekend wife & kids bought me the exact same setup !
They got it at Costco....not sure what they paid but I was pissed and happy at same time !
I got through first 3 parts of the DVD that came with it and that helped a lot. I plan of finishing it tomorrow and I bet i watch it a few more times....seems remembering it all is the challenge. Up till last weekend....I was still shooting 35mm film. Keep me posted with anything you discover ok.

I have the exact same camera and lens package. It is a great camera and takes great pictures. I started doing everything in JPEG which is the most common format, but now I shot everything in the RAW format. Large files, but on an 8gig cars I was still able to get over 400 shoots on a card at Sebring.
If there is one issue, it is the ratio in the camera that is built in and you cannot get an 8x10 print. I found that out the hard way when I planned a specific picture to be an 8x10 for a plaque.
