Charlton man arrested after allegedly driving 166 MPH on the Thruway
RAVENA — A Charlton man was arrested Wednesday after State Troopers allegedly clocked him driving 166 miles per hour down the Thruway.
Nikkolaus V. McCarthy, 25, of Charlton drove approximately 50 miles in 20 minutes before Troopers apprehended him when he ran low on gasoline.
He was spotted by a Trooper in the Village of Ravena in Albany County driving 166 miles per hour at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday. The Trooper tried to stop him when McCarthy slowed for traffic, but couldn’t catch him before he sped off on his Suzuki.
The Trooper did manage, however, to get a description and a license plate number before calling off the chase due to safety reasons.

New York State Trooper Spokesperson Mark Ceipel said his department does not discuss specifics of their pursuit policies, but said “safety is the upmost concern.”
Troopers monitored him throughout the man’s run, allegedly spotting him at various locations driving between 150 and 170 miles per hour — nearly three miles a minute. They finally caught up to him in New Paltz when he had to slow for traffic.
When he was advised of the speeds he was driving, he allegedly told Troopers his motorcycle “could easily go over 190 miles per hour,” according to police.
McCarthy was charged with third-degree fleeing police, reckless driving, misdemeanors, as well as speeding and operating out of class because he allegedly did not have his motorcycle license.
He was remanded to Albany County Correctional Facility on $20,000 cash bail.

Once you know you have been targeted by a speed trap worker, when you lose the worker, get off the road you are on, get lost on other roads. Make yourself scarce. Escape to drive another day.
The Trooper did manage, however, to get a description and a license plate number before calling off the chase due to safety reasons.

"Motorcyclist Clocked At 205 MPH Pleads Guilty
Dec 23, 2004 9:54 am US/Central
Wabasha, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota motorcyclist accused of buzzing down a rural highway at 205 mph must complete nearly an hour of community service for every mile-per-hour authorities say he was going.
Sam Tilley, 20, pleaded guilty Wednesday to speeding and driving without a motorcycle license. He was sentenced to a year of probation and 200 hours of community service. Wabasha County Attorney Jim Nordstrom said he dropped a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving.
Tilley, who previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, decided against going to trial on charges that carried maximum penalties of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Without a trial, Tilley and the State Patrol won't be able to make their case about how fast Tilley was actually going. In September, a state trooper flying above U.S. 61 in southeastern Minnesota used a stopwatch and road markings to clock Tilley going 205 mph in a 65-mph zone.
But motorcycle enthusiasts -- and Tilley himself -- said they doubted his Honda RC51 could move that fast. Tilley had his bike tested by a mechanic, who said it wouldn't exceed 159 mph.
Tilley wasn't talking about the guilty plea Wednesday and has given few interviews since the incident. The State Patrol didn't comment either.
Legal observers said while Tilley avoided jail time and fines, the community service requirement is far more than the 15 to 30 hours that even a first-time DUI offender often gets.
"If this kid gets past his probation and community service, he could have a future in motorcycle racing," said Joseph Daly, professor of law at Hamline University and a former prosecutor. "He just needs to keep it on the racetrack."

Another trooper ticketed for speeding
By Elizabeth Gibson
The Columbus Dispatch Thursday August 27, 2009
A trooper with the Athens post pulled over Trooper David Mills, 53, at about 7p.m. Sunday. Radar clocked him driving 97 mph in a 60 mph zone on Rt. 33 in Hocking County.
Bradshaw said it appeared a supervisor was involved in the decision to issue the ticket later that day. An internal investigation into whether the troopers broke any regulations was started Monday.

This week, a Gahanna police officer was fired for riding a motorcycle at 149 mph while off duty. A state trooper who was riding with him at 147 mph received a five-day unpaid suspension and was reassigned from the Columbus motorcycle unit to the Marysville post.
Officer Christopher Thomas, 33, and Trooper Jason E. Highsmith, 35, both entered guilty pleas in Licking County Municipal Court this month to speeding on I-70. Each was fined $150 and had his license suspended for six months, although Judge W. David Branstool granted both limited driving privileges.
