Dammit! I went to hit a bucket of balls just as my wife got back from the store. Came back an hour later and she said that one of our fish had jumped out of the patio pond and was dead. Wasn't moving at all. Probably had been there all day I'm thinking.

It happened once before on a hot day and the fish was toast in minutes probably. We hadn't lost a single one of these fish for over a year, kind of a record. So I tell her I'll take care of it in a bit, go in to my office, work for about an hour, and go out to toss the fish in the yard.

It's still trying to breathe. fck me.

I put it in the pond and it actually is alive. It has been out of the water for two hours minimum, laying in some dirt but also in the shade. Then I kind of get mad at my wife, who is so squeamish about dead things that she didn't get any closer than the bedroom window to verify the fish's deadness. I assumed she actually, you know, looked at it from a few feet away, not 10 feet through a window...

Now I feel terrible for making it suffer for an extra hour, and am kind of pissed that my wife didn't try to save it an hour before that.

Damn, I'm such a sucker for little animals.

You never used a worm to catch fish? maybe a cricket? cut up a Brim or a small trout? butchered a rabbit for stew?

Strung up a deer, pig??

If you had fallen into the pond, the fish wouldn't have done a damn thing for you.

We had that issue when we expanded our Koi pond. Put them in a large stock tank till the new pond was built.

We put an aerator in the tank to add oxygen and never lost another fish from jumping out.

Well, here's an update. Suicidal fish is alive and apparently unharmed, although a bit sluggish. I'm guessing class 3 brain damage, taking her memory retention from 6 seconds down to about 4, perhaps 3. Pray for her.

MORNING UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!

The fish is apparently just fine. Ate with the rest of her buddies and was back studying for the Bar. I didn't know a fish could survive 2 hours out of the water.

Ah, the plot thickens. While I was getting the grill ready, my wife saw a snake at the edge of the pond, kind of sticking about 8" of his body in the water. He had a fish-sized bulge. I tried to hook him with a BBQ tool but he went into the pond. After spending about 10 quality minutes of my life trying to catch him I eventually used a pair of tongs to grab his fcking snake neck and put him in a pot where I kept said snake neck clamped until I walked him about 50 yards away to the creek. Catch and release. He was a small (about 2' long) brown water snake, semi-poisonous but nothing to really worry about. And yes, he ate one of the smaller gold fish. That's probably why the other big fish jumped out yesterday, probably getting chased by that f'er.

your mistake was not squeezing the tongs tighter for a few more minutes.

That snake will be back in a week or two when it's hungry.

You coulda cut open the snake and saved the fishie. :yesnod:

I 'm pretty sure fish are higher on the scale than snakes, so you'd have done a good thing.

Put catfish in there. If you can kill one of those, you need to fill the pond with dirt.

I thought about it, briefly. But, um, ewwwwwww...

Plus these snakes are semi-poisonous so he probably got enough venom into the poor fishie to paralyze him.

How do you defend against herons, cormorants and other long-legged shore birds that feed on fish?

Around here, they visit ponds and pools, both public and private.

We have had blue herons clean out the pond in the past. Our solution was to get rid of the "fountain" noise and instead circulate the water under water so the pond makes no gurgling noise at all. Haven't seen one since. My theory is they see the rippling, gurgling water and are attracted to it. Also this pond is deeper than the old pond and we have put clay pots with holes in them along the bottom for hiding places, along with other hiding places higher up.

Catfish can. They can live submerged in mud alone for several days if their water supply dries up.

Carp are some of the toughest fish alive. In Myrtle Beach they have a lake at Broadway at the Beach that has Israeli Carp in it and they look like prehistoric fish with armor plating.
