Made in Australia? What kind of fighter is that? Looks like a V12, but doesn't look like a Rolls or Packard...

Looks like a survivable crash to me, and so no remains, they guys wandered off and died, I have heard of them following honing beacons along the med shore, and somehow getting that beacon on their six and them not knowing they'd passed the mark, so kept going....poor guys....

It's a P-40, and they had an Allison V12.

Packard built the Rolls Royce Merlin for the P-51, so they'd look almost identical to each other.

So was the P-40, which was really outdated by the time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Still, the P-40 served in both theaters, with a variety of nations throughout the war.

Looks restorable...

Surprisingly good shape for how long it's been sitting in the baking sun for all these years.

It was most likely buried under the sand and was recently discovered or uncovered by the changing sand dunes.

:iagree: If it hadn't been covered up I'm sure the plane would have been stripped of the metal in it.:cert:

Which Country flew it? Japan? But the circle is yellow.

By the markings and the battery, Australia. It was also flown by New Zealand, Canada, Egypt and Turkey.

Japan did fly captured P40's during the war, but not in North Africa.

The P40 was flown by pretty much every allied country in WWII and in every theater of operations, not the least of which would be the U.S. and Great Britain. (Obviously not all in Africa)

... and the most famous squadron of P-40s, Chennault's Flying Tigers in China.

I was getting on a plane in San Diego not too long ago, and one of these guys was waiting to board. The airline asked all military to come up and get on, the whole two of us, and politely asked the lady to let that gentlemen go on first. Until he went on she had no idea who he was.He had his jacket, leather style flight jacket. And he said thanks son. That is all I got out of him. But, it was cool nonetheless. Wish I had asked name etc from him, but he was definitely an tired old man not wanting attention, per sey.

Indeed, the French had them when the Nazis came knocking and the USSR flew them as well.

But this one is definitely displaying Australian markings.

Wasn't the P-40 one of the first planes to be configured like a fighter today, with a stick instead of a yoke?

Several WWI fighters had a stick.

The engine was turning when it landed. The prop is bent on all blades.

Shame the castings got broken when it contacted earth.

:iagree: I'm sure time will tell. Between this and those hurried fighters there's about to be a whole slew of new history shows.

It was definitely under power when it landed there. You can tell by the prop.
