I have a tree in front yard, not growing up top, must be 70' high, and so dead looking limbs with the rest seeming ok on leaves for this time of year....
the tree guys of course want to sell services, but most of them are condemning the entire tree, which is something I wish I took out years ago, but now I have to deal with the WIFE over this....
anyone with any experience with Florida trees??
300 bux to top the thing, but 800 to take it down to the stump....
trick is, we have a retaining wall to the sidewalk in front of that tree and I dunno what to do...take the whole thing as a threat in longer term, or just top off the branches....neighbor willing to kick in 300 bux to just get RID of the thing on account of leaves....and threat....

I've had to have several large oaks removed from our property. $800.00 for one that size is a great deal.:seasix:

If it can reach the house...take it out sooner rather than later.
I had an Oak miss my Orlando house by inches. I should have taken it out a few years prior when it put a hole in my roof during Hurricane Charley. Oaks are a HUGE liability in Florida due to the hurricanes. Get rid of it and get something that will survive a big storm.
800 bucks!!! you urbanites!! I paid my buddy a 100 bucks to come help me cut down 6 big white oaks two summers ago surrounding the house. Gotta know what youre doin tho, very easy to drop one the wrong way.

On the other hand, I had one huge (over 200 year old) white oak damaged in an ice storm several years ago. It had to be taken down basically a limb at a time as it over-hung the house. Took a week and cost 10 times Genes estimate. $800 doesn't sound all that bad!

$800 is less than the going rate around this part of FL.

If your neighbor is willing to chip in $300, just have the tree taken out.

Can't recall ever having seen an oak that fell over. They do split down the center though... You don't want to be aywhere near when that happens. I was 50 yards away from one that split in a wind storm and damn near had a heart attack from the adrenaline rush... It's very loud and the ground shakes.
I had a 70' oak removed 2 summers ago. Part of the tree came through the pool enclosure during Hurricane Charley in 04. I thought it would survive and it did for 5-6 years, until it started splitting down the middle. Tree was coming down one way or another, so I had it removed. The $2000 was cheaper than having it in my house.

You are up north and the oaks have a totally different leaf to them, down here they call a few varieties, Pin and Water mainly, but some of the tree men have said different types I can't remember....
the guy across the street on our 1/4 acre lots sub/div has had one of them hit his house...about 2.5' diameter, and so rotten there was about one 4x4 and two 2x4 worth of sound wood holding it up at the base, yet the tree LOOKED more or less ok...go figger, I hardly a tree expert....and yet many other on this street we have taken down maybe ten trees in the last 12 years....
the tree guys like to say they have a life of maybe 40-60 years and so this hood is 40 y/o....
guess I have to go with total removal......wife suggested to get the trunk stump cut down to a bench to sit on...maybe do flowers?? whatever....
so to make pretty over a loss, I guess....
the 800 buck estimate is about 1/2 what some others want....
but still 4x what I paid 15 years ago....for TWO similar trees....

thing that really hacks me off is I MUCHO rather the neighbors' tree on the property line overhanging my damn driveway was the one need take down...
freeking filthy damn thing....sheds leaves 6 months out of the year....all over the joint....damnit....

Get that stump out of there too. Much better get it done and dealt with than having to deal with it later on when it's got termites.
