Michigan woman who got food stamps after $1M lottery jackpot win charged with welfare fraud

A Michigan woman who continued to get food stamps after winning a $1 million lottery jackpot has been charged with welfare fraud.

The Michigan attorney general's office announced two felony charges Tuesday against 25-year-old Amanda Clayton of Lincoln Park. She was arrested Monday and was expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Lincoln Park's 25th District Court. The charges are punishable by up to four years in prison.

Clayton chose a $700,000 lump sum, before taxes, last fall after winning the jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" a Michigan lottery game show.

The case came to light last month. She told Detroit TV station WDIV at the time that she thought it might have been OK to keep using food stamps because she wasn't working.

She was dropped from the food program.

Don't worry. She'll blow through her winnings and be back sucking off the gov't tit in less than a year.

Probably by the time the story ran...

State lotteries should have some kind of clawback provision.....if you have ever received any kind of welfare, Medicaid, or other state handouts, that money gets deducted from your winnings, right off the top, just like the income tax is deducted. States could decide amongst themselves if they wanted to collect and remit restitution for welfare paid in other states.

All government assistance should be considered a loan and should be collected from garnishments on future wages and/or liens on property.

If she was REALLY needy why did she have enough to spend on a lotery ticket?

End all welfare in America. Work or die.

I like that idea a lot. However, imagine the sob story that would get written when some welfare queen/king won a $500k prize and every bit of it was taken by the state.

So you feel that if you get laid off and receive unemployment benefits you should have to pay it back once you get a job?

Well, it would make it less likely for people to remain unemployed for 99 months like they do now. :D

It would depend on how the government assistance was funded. Things like unemployment, disability are insurance funds that require employee/employer participitation. I also do not mean Social Security or Medicare.

I was thinking more of outright freebies like food stamps and welfare.

In terms of sharpness, look over a couple of inches. This girl's sharpness level is more on par with a spoon rather than a dull knife. [and not the prison sharpened kinda spoon)

unemployment is not taken from taxpayer funds; it's seperately funded by the companies.

Sometimes, politicians will extend unemployment benefits... and then I believe taxpayers money may fund a part of it.

I'm going to split down the middle. State unemployment insurance is fully funded by employer contributions, and (in Texas, anyway), pays for 6 months of "coverage." After that FUTA (Federal Unemployment Tax) is also paid by the employer, but the relatively small amount paid can't possibly fully fund 99weeks of unemployment payments. I'm guessing dear old taxpayer pays for the overage.

So, I wouldn't claw back for the state unemployment insurance payments, or the part normally funded by FUTA (seems like it used to be an extra 3 months, IIRC). I would claw back the portion funded by taxpayers, though.

Here in good old CA, they give debit cards to these people to be used at:
casinos, medical marijuana shops, psychics, massage parlors, bars, and more. They discovered that most would use their cards in Las Vegas for gambling. Nice.
