In a daring escape caught on film, a young steer took his life into his own hooves Tuesday when he fled from the New Jersey slaughterhouse where he faced certain death. After crossing a river and surviving an urban roundup, complete with police cars and a tranquilizer gun, the lucky steer has found a permanent home with a volunteer from Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary (with the blessing, of course, of the slaughterhouse owner).

Coldtiz Castle, in the Saxony region of Germany, was known as "Oflag IV-C" during WWII and was one of the Third Reich's POW prisons. Some of the most inventive and amazing escapes of all time happened there, including the guys that built an actual glider, "The Colditz Cock", under the nose of the Nazis and attempted to fly it from the roof.

The stories were turned into a hit television show in the UK after the war, called Colditz.

Obscure here, but in the UK, that one would have them on the floor...

You should check out the stories sometime... it was the inability of the Colditz SS Guards to keep prisoners inside the wall that directly inspired Hogan's Heroes...

Nothing quite like a bunch of city slickers trying to round up a steer

Sirens, flashing lights and probably a bunch of yelling. No wonder it took off
