Allright So My Trip Back From CA...

Sorry it's been a while...been catching up with life here. Remember I said the rear of the car was making noise? Well...seems when I put the screws to it outside of El Paso, I blew out a pinion bearing. Surprised I made it home. Whole rearend comes apart. We replaced all the bearings, all the U-joints and the two rear wheel bearings. Also put in a Hurst short-throw shifter for good measure.

My mechanic, who is a master engine builder and someone I trust implicitly, said that there was probably nothing I could have done to prevent it. It seems the car wasn't run that hard and when I cranked it up, that's all it took. Interesting thing we found when the rearend was apart: I have 4.09 gears and not the stock 3.54's. Someone swapped out gears and also managed to leave out a few parts such as a crush sleeve and a few shims. We left the 4.09's in because they really work in that car.

I'm bummed I had to spend the $$$, but the fix was worth it. She drives as smooth as silk now with crisp shifts. Put on a set of Nitto 555's and I was good for 130MPH on the Texas backroads this weekend. :seasix:

I wasn't too exited to have to rebuild the ZF, but I can mash on that car anytime or drive it 500 miles without much more than a quick oil and tire pressure check.

Oh...and I absolutely love the sound of the engine when it cranks up. :seasix:

The joys of owning a C4 IC. But what concerns me is that you said you were near El Paso when your pinion blew. You didn't see this character any where near your Vette at any time, did you:D

I would a better moderator than Joe on a bad day, but based on my history...
