View Full Version : Anybody moving away from Google?

Over the past few weeks I have started migrating email accounts over to eM client. I cancelled my Google+ account, and have gone through every setting to try and make myself invisible.

The only thing I want running through Google is my business AdWords Account.

I may be paranoid but I hate the feeling that I'm being watched everywhere I go and everything I click is saved somewhere.

I'm also in the process of deleting my youtube account as it is now linked to google directly without having any choice in the matter.

I've only ever used Google for searching.

And, will continue to do so. Won't give them everything else.

Not that I think they are bad at the other, just never felt the need to give them the chance.

Using Google AdWord has been a big eye opener. They are able to collect way too much information on people if you ask me.

I don't know. It's like I'm doing something wrong but I think they have gone too far with linking all your different accounts together.

I have removed Google Chrome from my PC but both my smartphone and my tablet are Android (Google) devices. I have tried to remove as many things as I can do without from them and won't add anything more unless my life depends on it.

I agree, it's a weird line to walk. I respect on one hand what they are doing, but when at a hiccup they can take everything away you start to think.

My woman has a Youtube account. Like Facebook, you can have a huge presence and base, but if you push things too far . . Poof ... you're gone. Like you were never there. No judge, jury, just that someone complained and they'd rather not deal with the BS.

Social media will be the new government soon. Or new frontier.

Just remembered I'm using Chrome. :slap:

:iagree:

Possible Google passes on info on to the .gov but... I kinda doubt it (yet)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am thinking from what I have read, most info collected by Google is done so they know what ads to put up in front of you while you surf the net.

I do think visiting certain websites might attract some .gov attention though.

For instance anything connected to certain terrorist groups as an example...

Oh well.

Why :bilmem:

I use my own email for youtube, I don't think it is mandatory to use gmail to have an account there..

Here are a few things that should help give a little more privacy though.

How to remove your Google Web Data History - Yahoo! And for those like myself that use Mozilla Firefox.

Mike, can you post the links to the sites that you find embarrassing, so we can decide if you are paranoid or not?... :datawiz:

And half of what you think the government is doing with the information is RONG.

First of all, a user is but one of a few hundred million people and no one in the .GOV cares that you are downloading porn and whacking off to it. There are algorithms though, that the .GOV does monitor, and surfing internet porn is not really the profile they GAF about. They also could care less if you are cheating on your taxes or have two wives. Unless you are actually a terrorist, you probably have nothing to worry about.

I would HOPE the .gov monitors child porn sites, and kills all the folks involved.....I would hope they do the same with terrorists....

either one is like leaving a loaded gun in a room full of active little kids, and time bombs need defusing...

It's not the government I'm worried aboot really.

Being self employed I think it's important to keep your personal life away from your professional life.

I don't think there should be an easy way for people to find out who you are by back tracking through all your different accounts. I don't want my customers seeing or having access to my social websites like fb or youtube.
Which is another reason none of my user names have my name in them.

After talking with the customer service reps through Adword and helping me setup my account the information she was telling me was creeping me out.

Unfortunately Google owns Youtube and to have a youtube account(to have playlists and favourite videos) you have to have a Google account. I tried signing up last night with but couldn't.

While Google and Facebook are catching a lot of hell for their policy changes (and I enjoy watching Facebook get crapped on for it, in full disclosure), they aren't the only ones collecting data.

Do you have an ISP? Guess what, they get your data too.
Got a cell phone? Yep them too.
Do you go outside of your house? Wave to the cameras.

It's a brave new world we live in today where people are tracked in ways they probably don't even know about.

Doesn`t mean I have to hand it to them.

Like I said it`s not the government I`m worried aboot. It`s the eventual process of having your professional life mixed with your personal that I am not too fond of.

To answer the question, no. I'm actually using Google products more now that I have an Android phone.

I've watched several videos from top security experts showing how much personal information is available online. Basically, you can run, but you can't hide. You're not really gaining anything by not using Google.

I understand what you are saying.
Again, it`s not really hiding what I am doing that I am worried aboot.
It`s minimizing the risk of my personal life being mixed with business.

I think a lot of corporate companies will do some snooping before handing someone $10k to do work for them.

No doubt about it.

You're going to reduce your risk and make it harder for the common person to find your information. Based on my understanding, that's basically what you're trying to do. :seasix:

Unfortunately, child porn isn't so much a national security interest. Sure, if local government becomes aware of something then they may take action, but by and large, NSA et al, are not looking that sort of thing.

Just go off the grid. Pay cash for everything, forsake all electronic devices. Some people do it.
