The minimum level of acceptable spending, at which you seek new and creative ways in attempts to double, tripple, or even quadruple.

Ever tell a bride the week of "that's too expensive"? Well that'll cost you rush shipping on top of it :banghead:

On a brighter side I can't wait to see everybody and celebrate my marriage to Karen!

When we "splurged" on our wedding, it was for the venue (a yacht in Kemah).

Other than that, we kept things pretty in expensive.

Heck we did our own table decorations with family and friends helping. :yesnod:

I can top ya! My wife wore her sister's dress, my wife's grandma made the cake, and I stole the candles from Wal Mart.

Second - I will keep you in my thoughts because this will be a very stressful week for all involved but like everything else, it will pass.

Most important - enjoy the day and try and savor every moment. I'm sure that everything will work out exactly how it should.

It all depends on the financial situation of the couple (and their parents), and how much they are comfortable spending.
I think it is absolutely ludicrous for a couple who is spending their own money on the wedding to put themselves into debt in order to get married though.
The first couple of years of marriage are hard enough with adding in an extra (and completely unnecessary) financial burden to the household.
It is entirely possible to have a nice ceremony and fun reception without spending yourselves into debt.
I think the wedding industry has done a serious disservice to young people by making them believe they have to spend $20,000 + in order to get married.

The wedding day should be fun and memorable for both the participants and the guests, but it is just one day out of the rest of your lives and you should not have to spend years paying for it.

At the time we lived in NY. We started looking into the expense of doing a wedding there and the cost just got way out of control really quickly. As a result we decided that we would just elope. Well certain people got offended and wanted to be there etc so we let it be known that we were getting married in Vegas memeorial day weekend and if you wanted to show up that's fine but you're paying your own way.

After it was all said and done, the reception part of things costabout $4500 on top of the cost of the dress, suite, wedding bands, airfare and hotel, etc.. All in all it was less than $10k all in. I don't recall exactly how much though.

:iagree: We went to St. Thomas for a beach wedding and flew our Pastor and his wife down for the weekend. We told everyone we didn't expect anybody, but all that were able to, were welcome. We were going to honeymoon in the VI anyway.

Got away with spending 1/5 or less than many of our friends have.
Our photog got married in Italy and her Dad rented a villa for 40 of us in Siena.
Between the Villa, catered food (5 star) wedding staff, chachki's etc; the ticket was at least $80k.

I think my FIL paid close to $50K for our wedding (2nd one for Chapsaltuck's family in Korea) and that covered the ceremony, venue (western and Korean style - seperate ceremonies and settings), the traditional Korean wedding clothes called a Hanbok for us and my mother, and the reception.

Trina and I had a fairly decent sized wedding (200+ guests, full reception with meal, etc.) She's Polish with a good sized family, and I come from big families as well (German/Irish) so that put us close to $10K when it was all said and done. Trina saved for the better part of 2 years and her parents covered a large chunk as well.

We had a JP wedding here in the states two years prior to the one in Korea. The one he paid for had the western and korean ceremonies all in one package.

Here's the kicker, the guests give donations of money to the family and also leave a little something for the bride and groom. Plus the family will give them some of the money, too. I think we were given about $3K total.
