That's Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in our first look at The Lone Ranger, directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates Of The Carribean) and written by Justin Hayth, who was nominated for a best adapted screenplay for his work on Revolutionary Road.
Disney intends to release The Lone Ranger in May 2013.

Clever, but expensive for them to cast Depp as Tonto. I guess that would be a cue as to the "flavor" of the script?

Expensive? These days Disney can't afford NOT to put Johnny Depp in their movies.

An effective formula for success indeed; although big names didn't save the likes of Ishtar.

So without Googling, which film does the Guiness Book of World Records say is the biggest film flop of all time?

Cleopatra?
Edit: I looked it up. Cleopatra made half of it's production cost back in cinemas, and it's the incorrect answer.
The correct answer... cost $100MM to make, and made $10MM in cinemas. Ouch.

I was surprised by the answer - ran across it a couple of months ago. Hint for those still thinking: Geena Davis appeared in the film and the flop led to the wide-spread belief she couldn't carry a film.
Course, there were 90 million good reasons for that belief.

Water World
People actually went and saw Waterworld. It made $265MM worldwide in cinemas, against a production budget of $175MM
I thought maybe Battlefield Earth, and it did only make $21MM at cinemas, but it also only cost $74MM to make, so it still made back more than the correct answer.

I laughed when I looked it up. Seems I was one of the 15 people that actually went and saw it in theaters. You see, I'm a big fan of Cronenberg's The Fly, and still thought Geena Davis was hot at the time... and the whole thing was kinda hot in the trailer.... man I was doing sooooo many drugs then...

I'm a Fly fan myself. Also liked her in Beetlejuice. Less so in A League of Their Own.
Anyway, time for me to go work out. Answer, for those still noodling, is Cutthroat Island. While some say it killed CarolCo, the studio was already bankrupt by the time the movie was released.
Sorry for the hijack, Apex. :cert:

Wait why aren't Native American groups all pissed off at a white dude playing Tonto?
Who you callin' white man, pale face? Depp is part Native American, apparently.
How long before we have the ACLU protesting that a Native American actor was not used in the role of Tonto?

Not Heaven's Gate?
UA lost $41MM on Heaven's Gate. CarolCo lost just over twice that on Cutthroat Island...

When the ACLU fronts the money to make the movie, they can choose whoever they want to play any part. Until then, it's better if they just STFU.
