View Full Version : [Photography] February Assignment

Grey Ghost
02-15-2012, 8:21pm
The assignment for this month is a doorknob. Mounted, unmounted, old, new, etc...post your best in this thread. We will pick a different subject each month.

Rules: The picture must have been taken by you. No googling and posting up other peoples stuff. You are the one that pressed the button to capture the image. You can post up a few pictures or only one.

Equipment: Webcam, cellphone, point/shoot, DSLR, medium format, etc...it doesn't matter. As long as you are the person that captured the image.

Post processing: Allowed. Some people shoot in raw. Some think it may look better in black/white. Some want to adjust color, etc...all of this is okay. Just don't chop something into the picture that wasn't there when you captured the image. If you don't use any PP that is fine too. You may want to note it in your post.

Optional: You can post your EXIF information or equipment used.

This is for fun. But please follow the basic rules. If you want to post a picture of 'luter dude opening the door at the Heineken warehouse...start a different thread

Let me know, if you think the pics should be judged by the 'Thanks' button ? Maybe the monthly winner can get some Barn Bucks ? Or just post them up without judgement ?

Anytime between now and the end of the month. We will get the next one started on time lol. Also some feedback/poll on what next months subject should be...

Some way to judge and winner picks next assignment. Give a few days after deadline for voting.

And does the pic have to be taken during the assignment or a pic from the past ok?

My vote would be it has to be from the assignment. For me it will kick my ass into taking pictures and not looking through my hard drives.

This is a picture of a Lock, not a Doorknob. And it was taken in March, last year.
Other than those disqualifiers, how's this as an example ??...

http://jms32935.com/tmp/IMG_0118.jpg

What we have here is a nut on a chain which can exit through any one of those keyholes, and that chain holds that gate closed. As long as all those keyholes are occupied with those padlocks, the gate is locked. If any one of those padlocks is removed, the nut and chain can be removed through that keyhole.

This is really just a more complicated implementation of multiple locks on a chain, like normally done...

http://jms32935.com/tmp/DSC_0276.JPG

The 1st example may be a bit tidier, but I'm surprised someone went to the trouble.
What I found interesting is the fact that they did.

:iagree: that it should be shot for the assignment, but if someone has a kickass photo in their files, I'd love to see it in the mix.

Forcing yourself to see and photograph an everyday subject in a new way gets the creative juices flowing. It's much more fun overall.

As for judging, using the Thanks button is a good idea because people can only vote once per post, yet they can vote for multiple posts. Voting can be done throughout the life of the thread till the deadline. We may even see the Barn membership soaring if people get all their relatives signed up so they can vote....

No pics from the past. Only ones taken during the month of the assignment. If you have one from the past that you love. Go back and try shooting it again. I think this will motivate people to open their eyes to their surroundings and get them off the couch.

I'm offering this creative idea to anyone who wants it, contingent on prior agreement to split the barn bucks 50/50 with me for this fantastic idea.

1) find child with tooth ready to be pulled

2) tie string to said tooth and to door knob

3) have some one else slam door shut

4) at the moment the tooth flies out of said kid's mouth, take high speed image of tooth in mid flight, with doorknob and kid in the periphery.

5) profit

Grey Ghost

Doesn't have to be from your house. Just think...what if someone posted a picture from a John Dillenger holdout or Graceland...or a reflection of a pretty girl in the doorknob...an old antique doorknob...maybe it's about the history of the people that used that doorknob that makes the photo special. A cellphone picture of one like that might be better than a full blown professional picture of a diamond and gold crusted door knob to a mansion...

When it hits the crystal door knob it goes nuts with refraction.

I have a large collection of doorknobs, back plates and a few hinges from an old Victorian mansion in my hometown. I always hoped to have an old home so I could install them, but until that happens, I use them in other ways.

DAB, I didn't shoot them in the pro studio, just my living room.

How about post here, and create a thread with the entries for and critiques when all the entries are submitted?

:dunno:

take all entries into a new thread after deadline for a 2 or 3 day voting period?

or maybe we send all the entries to an online album and don't show them off until deadline is up and then everyone has the same amount of time/exposure for votes?

You can't. This is just the first assignment and I think we should keep it as simple as possible. The only people who will come in will be those with an interest in it. I like the fact that it's been called an assignment rather than a contest. The use of the thanks button is good. People can only use it once per post but they can vote for multiple posts.

There have already been helpful tips passed along and I hope there will constructive criticism also. Some people have a great deal of knowledge to share and some people really want to learn. There are always new things to learn. It's all good.

I happen to really like Kingpins entry. I've shown it to quite a few people who like it also. It proves that it's not about the fancy equipment, it's about your ability to see a good shot. It's about taking a chance and putting your image out there.

I'd like to propose that entries and votes are allowed till 11:59 on the last day of the month. The person with the most thanks gets to choose the next months' assignment in a new post. One of us can come in and call it after the deadline passes. If things get out of hand....we can come up with other rules. Simple as that.

If y'all want to give this a try for this month, please hit the thanks button.

Two antique glass doorknobs. Canon 20d/50mm 1.8 with ambient light. The 50 has good BOKEH that produces the creamy background. I bumped it up to 400 ISO, due to indoor light.
