Quit while you're ahead. Just sayin'

Oh and one more thing: You didn't "pick up the habit" so stop kidding yourself. You were around people who smoked, they probably persuaded you to try it, you wanted to look cool, the rest is history.

My question is.......Why did you start? I have had way too many patients that are now toting an oxygen bottle around with them or soon will be. Watching a smoker die is brutal for the family and worse for the smoker.

You, yes, YOU! Stop right now. Stop while you stil can. I smoked for twenty years. When I had been smoking for a year, I said, "I can quit when ever I want." Five years later, I was still saying the same thing. Fifteen years later I tried to quit. I couldn't. Twenty years later, when I was 36, I had a heart attack. When I was in ICU, I couldn't smoke. Laying in my bed, I could see across the ward, into the room of a man that was obviously very ill. Oxygen, grim faces from doctors and nurses, and the constant wheezing he made - that you could hear across the ward - as he grasped for a breath. I never touched a cigarette again. It will be five years this August and I still crave one like a mofo at times. The sooner you quit, the easier it will be to quit. How many people have to tell you this before you will believe them? We are not harping, we long time smokers and ex-smokers know the hell you will go through. They cost a fortune now anyway. Why pay to kill yourself?

Smoking killed my mom and it took 10 long agonizing years to do it, after they removed her left lung.

You think it's cool now but when you find you can't quit and then ten years later are dragging around an oxygen bottle, you don't look nearly as cool.

Plus it's expensive a hell now days. Just roll up a dollar and set it on fire.

Just had to get rid of cancer to prove it, smoke all you want, you haven't got the foggiest idea what you are doing to yourself and what you could be up against. And the real kick in the ass for me is when my dad died in my arms from cancer, I quit then and there on the spot 14 years ago.

I quit a mere five months ago, but you gotta start somewhere. I surely hope that my 20 year smoking career is a thing of the past, because I'm much better off now. It was peer pressure that got me hooked at 15, and it was nicotine and my own weakness that kept me coming back for more. But on Christmas Eve I decided I would no longer be weak and make excuses. I didn't quit for the money I'd save. . . I quit for the days, weeks, months and years of life that I will HOPEFULLY save.

Joe seriously.....quit. My neighbor cant leave his house now. Getting up from his chair and walking to the restroom takes everything he has. I smoked for about two years, switched to Copenhagen for about 18 years and quit that 10 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Just like Sneaks said, I wish I had never in my life seen any type of tobacco. My father smoked for years before I was born. He was 36 when I was born and 72 when he died. Doctors said even that many years later, smoking contributed to his death.

It's just some older and wiser folks advising you it's a horrible (and expensive) habit to get addicted to, and it's a real beotch to quit once you are fully hooked. :yesnod:

Take that advice and get out of it while you can. Smoking for only a year, you should be able to quit it without too much fuss.
The more accomplished addicts with decades of heavy use under their belt don't find it quite so easy.

I have no problem with smokers, or even the smoke. What you are receiving here is very good advice from some smokers (or ex-smokers), not offensive comments picking on you for polluting their air.

I think most will agree we'd just rather not see you, a relatively young guy with a whole future to live for, travel down that unhealthy path in life. That is all.

Thanks Kim. Sorry to hear about your mom. I know all too well how tough that is. Every year on Mom's Birthday I've thrown up a long post on CF about the struggles she had trying to quit and then the real hardship my Dad faced when she effectively became an invalid. Even if smokers aren;t worried about what it does to them, they should consider the effects on those who'll have to take care of them when they can't go to the bathroom on their own.

Joey - It's not a matter of liking smoking or not. I enjoy an occasional cigar but cigarette smoking as a habit is just a proven bad idea.

My gf,parents, sisters, friends, and I know how bad it is for me
I just get frustrated with people who come onto work: mexicans who speak no English,in-breed coonasses that are trying to Jerry rig and ask me to figure out how they should do it.
Think trunk monkey at CIX
