View Full Version : After 30 years of drilling, scientists have reached the surface of Lake Vostok

'Lost World' reached: 20 million yr old Antarctic lake 'drilled' — RT (http://rt.com/news/antarctic-million-secrets-lake-583/)

It's a lake the size of Lake Ontario that's under 3km of ice, and separated from the rest of the world for about 20 million years.

I wonder what they're gonna find down there? Completely sterile environment? Dormant sea monster?

They won't be able to take water samples until later this year. Presumably during the antarctic summer. Which would be around December.

Perhaps..... December 21, 2012.

Man I hope someone had presence of mind to send ol' Kurt up there with some bangsticks and a flamethrower. Having just watched the remake this weekend (it sucked...but not as badly as I thought)...I'm concerned.

Russian team completed drilling a week ago, vodka party ensued, vodka ran out, they called in a smidge late.

The team drilling the hole had been listed as out of contact, or no contact for a week. No one had been able to get them on a radio.

(I'm wondering if they checked their FB and twitter feed :) )

elaborate.

Just last week there was a few new stories about the drilling team not radioing in.
Prior to this announcement released by several news agencies today, I was under the impression they were beginning to worry that they may have lost the whole drilling team, and there was no way to send out a rescue mission until after the winter.

Which is not quite what this article says, but you get the message.

:iagree::iagree: Something fishy is happening, I don't think that team of Russian scientist is the same ones that left, they've been replaced.

Hmmm, I didn't realize they had lost contact with the drilling team.

But, they're drilling down into a highly pressurized lake, with the weight of 3000 meters of ice on top of it. WHAT IS THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN??

realistically, the water isn't ever more that 13,000 years old.

the water of the lake is continually freezing and being carried away by the motion of the Antarctic ice sheet, while being replaced by water melting from other parts of the ice sheet in these high pressure conditions. This resulted in an estimate that the entire volume of the lake is frozen and removed every 13,300 years—its effective mean residence time.

But whatever is living in the water has been genetically isolated from the rest of the planet for 25 million years.

Presumably mutating and waiting... waiting.... waiting.... for The Day.
