I bought a couple of local Confederate Infantry Cast I buttons. These buttons are pretty solid chunks of heavy brass with a small hole in the shank to sew them to the uniform. That is the main reason so many were lost and dug up by relic hunters over the years. The weight with only a little thread holding them to the jacket and they were easily lost. Lots of the usual guns, swords, accoutrements, etc...One dealer had a pretty nice model 1854, .54 cal. Austrian Lorenz (heavily used by Confeds. during the war). We couldn't agree on a price or it would have come home with me. If I could just win the lottery...what a collection I would have lol. Prices seem to have stayed the same over the last couple of years. Confed. kepi's at $16k, buckles in the $3k-$13k range, buttons range from $100-$1000. Price always depends on rarity, condition, and any supporting documentation. Reproduction items are too scary close to original items.

“That was recovered off the coast of Charleston, S.C. Just after the Civil War, they were taking a bunch of cannons to a scrap yard and the boat capsized. About 25 cannons sank into the ocean. A couple of guys recovered that one and restored it. They are taking it up to a collector in Nashville, and they brought it here. The tube alone weighs 13,000 pounds,” said Mike Kent, promoter of the Chickamauga Civil War Show and Sale taking place at the trade center this weekend."

I collect Confederate Money and I also have an 1862 Atlanta news paper,it's fun to read first hand reports on the war,one article was about the Southern bells inviting Union soldiers to social parties and upon their arrival would be arrested by the Confederates .

Too bad the same thing couldn't be said about medical science/technology at the time. :sadangel:

A pic of the Confederate Infantry Cast I buttons I bought. You can see that they are a good chunk of brass and heavy for a button. The hole in the shank is were the thread would pass thru to hold them to the jacket. You can see how easy it was for them to have been lost with only a little thread trying to secure them to a jacket.

Long about '78 or so I picked up a CW Union rifle that had a bent barrel and some missing lockwork, but the trigger and guard were still there, the walnut stock was mostly intact, with spots of OEM finish still there....

but there was this imbedded chunk of lead in the right side of the stock just below the cheek plate.......

the damn thing was as real as anything, dug up from Gettysburg battlefield site, supposedly an adjacent farm....the .gov makes a big deal over it, but the .gov is nutz, what the hell, they going to let it all rust to nothing?? why?? so anyway it went as a favor swap to a friend....

Nice pics and info
Since I live in Yorktown VA ( a mile from the battlefields!) I find all kinds of stuff on my property.
Last was a 1873 in my garden as I was working the ground......just like this:

I can't make it this year. But, a lot of my friends will be down there. It is the first event of the year and draws a ton of reenactors. :seasix:
