A variety of topics today, so grab and beer...and no Googling!

1. Major Tom, an astronaut, was on his last mission at the International Space Station. One of his tasks there was to free a stuck bolt that was preventing a solar collector from deploying. While the other crew members slept, he put on his space suit, opened the hatch, and with his tool kit in hand, he exited the spacecraft. He managed to free the stuck bolt and deployed the solar collector.

As he turned to pick up his tool kit he noticed it had drifted away a few feet. He grabbed it, but in the process he managed to lauch himself into the inky darkness of space. And in his haste he had forgotten the all-important tether.

Now the distance between him and the safety of the hatch was slowly, but undeniably, increasing. He called for help, hoping that his shipmates could help, and they couldn't hear him. Why? They were all sleeping! But in utter frustration and despair, Tommy did something that saved his life. The question is, what did he do?

"Clown control to Mao Tse-Tung,
commencing countdown, engines on...."

2. Take the number 4 and use it five times to come up with the number 54. You can use any of the math operators you want: addition, subtraction, decimals, fractions, square roots, factorial, any of that stuff. You can't use cube roots because you'd be using the number 3. You can only use the number 4. What's the equation?

3. A car collector friend of mine bought two cars at auction. He called me when the cars were delivered to him, and I asked him to tell me what he bought. He siad that he bought a car manufactured in the early 60s and a car made in the mid 70s. He also bet me $100 that I wouldn't be able to tell them apart! "No way!", I said. "I grew up in the 60s, and I can tell which car is which 50' away!". I took his bet...and lost. What were the cars?

Givens: I wasn't blind-folded, the cars were made in the U.S., the were completely stock, anyone could have bought them, and you've seen them.

4. What is a common, seven-letter word that cannot be made playing Scrabble?

5. Two workers were getting paid the same weekly salary. Last year Bob got a raise of 10%. His coworker, Bill, received a pay cut of 10%. This year Bill got a raise of 10%, and Bob received a 10% pay cut. Who's making more money now? Explain your answer.

6. You have the misfortune to own an unreliable clock. This one gains exactly 12 minutes every hour.It is now showing 10pm and you know that is was correct at midnight, when you set it. The clock runs for less than 24 hours.

The clock stopped four hours ago. What is the correct time now?

he threw the wrench (or better yet, the entire tool kit) into space, away from the station, thus propelling himself back towards the station.

now, if he had packed a pistol along (say a .45ACP), he could have fired towards the inky darkness, and been shoved back towards the station as well.

11:28pm and 48 seconds!

 Another hint: Since the clock is gaining 12 minutes every hour, for every real hour that has passed, the clock will show 72 minutes.

lspencer534
02-05-2012, 5:38pm
Since the clock shows 10.00pm, we know that 1320 clock minutes have passed. 1320 ÷ 72 x 60 = 1100.

lspencer534
02-05-2012, 5:39pm
This therefore equals 1100 real minutes and hence 18 hours 20 minutes.
