View Full Version : Ratpack-I'm struggling with a decision

Since the Ratpack bunch know the area here quite well...

I have been offered a position in the company that I currently work for that is in Suffolk.

That would mean I have to cross the Coleman and the Monitor Merrimac to get there. It's 51 miles vs 33 miles one way. Ya'll know I live in North Gloucester County.

The job interests me but the drive concerns me.

Thoughts?

Merrimac is normally decent to get through. I didn't look for a house up your way because 17 through Grafton suks so bad.

I live in Suffolk and rarely venture to the other boroughs especially during the week. One thing I do notice is that around rush hour 664 on this side of the bridge is pretty damn busy but it's moving right along.

I guess part of the decision should be based on the pay increase. Take into account the more cash you'll spend on gas etc. Then see how much more you will actually be making after deducting that.

Coleman has a toll on it going back towards you way from this side I think, but unless there is an accident, the MMBT is not usually that bad and moves pretty fast....well at least steadly during rush hour.

My wife is commuting to Va Beach from Williamsburg about 3 days a week...thru the HRBT. Its long but she has a slightly flexible schedule so its not killing her.

I hate HRBT. I won't drive down that way now tourist season is starting unless I have to. I don't know why, but people drive in the tunnel at 65MPH and want to slow down to 45MPH exiting, and then they wonder why it backs up.

I'm with you I avoid the HRBT anytime I can, I use MMBT.
I drive this area for work a lot, that is a long daily drive I would worry about the Coleman and 17 more than the MMBT. I could do it but I put about 45,000Miles a year on my work van so I'm used to it. Good luck.

Should be some good deals on some nice properties soon, with the paper mill in Franklin closing.

I live just before the coleman(yorktown side) and work in downtown suffolk.I have for used the MM Ten years and can only think of maybe one time traffic was bad enuff for a 10 minute delay. I think it has alot to do with the time of day(I come threw at 7-715am) I will say that the 5pm time frame looks sluggish but NOTHING compared to HRBT I come home same time since I work 24hr shifts(but only 10days a month).

Because of the horrible smell I bet they can't give houses away in Franklin.

Don't worry, we'll always have A farm, not sure if it will be this one though. Wife wants more acreage. We have 12 now, she wants 40+

Just like a woman, you give her 6 and she wants 8, give her 8 and she wants 12, give her 12...and now she wants 40. :leaving:

There are a couple of guys that work with me in Surry, and commute from Gloucester every day, crossing the Coleman and the JRB. They don't seem to mind it. Rt. 17 is not that bad in the AM, but it does suck in the PM. But my 70 mile round trip commute is how I got 116,000+ on the Vette! :yesnod:

No matter what, I avoid the Interstate system here on the Southside at whatever cost...
