Anyone with any experience calling the Philippines??? my neighbor's wife is from there and all the time calling her family, chatting up a bill with ATT, he claims there is no other choice because of some deal with ATT over there, I say bullshit, there IS a way around it, he claims not....
I think Magic Jack would work fine so just dial the freeking number and get over it....

Looks like Magic Jack only works going to the US and not calling to the Phils. Also you can't use magic jack with a cell phone. Not too many house phones there. I used Skype and their rate was around $.15 a minute.
I did use my android phone with GrooveIP on it to call back to the states for free using a wifi source in the phils. But calling to the phils while in the phils I still needed Skype @ $.15 a minute.
So my recommendation is to send a cheap android over with groove IP and all they would have to pay is for internet which is about 20 bucks a month or 999 peso's to call her in the US.
P.S. Groove IP ($5 bucks) can only be purchased while in the states and you also need a Google voice number which is free.
Oops forgot to add computer to computer calls with video are free on skype!

I use Skype to talk to my boss in the UK all the time. Free international calls. I even have a pimp ass Logitech headset that plugs into the USB port. We even do three way calling on it too for client meetings. You can even set up webcams for real time video calls to, all for free.
Only question is do they have a computer with a stable internet connection on their end..

Skype can be used all over the world. I know since I've used it in all kinds of places. The only thing is the both folks, the caller and the callee, need to have Skype. It's pretty simple to set up and away they can go.

Well, they already are good to go except for the common brownouts.
And yep, that's me. The wife and I were in Palawan back in June, 2011.

You see where Globe is heavily investing in the future due to everyone wanting a smart phone? In the paper yesterday, Globe just secured a $90M loan from China for modernization. I guess they can now increase their tin cans with string. :D

You know how loans work in the Philippines..
No one pays anyone back, and it's your own fault because you loaned it to me.

:iagree:
These cats give loan sharks a good name.
Did you see they've worked the mojo on the IMF? The IMF gave a $500M loan to help in the recovery of typhoon Sedong. I saw published reports of damages totaling around $25M. Now, they've got the IMF involved in kickbacks. That's working the mojo.

Truth.
Could you imagine if the folks got their shit together? I mean, think of Hawaii the size of this country. Your beach front property might get you more Tanduay than you'd know how to use.

I'll have to ask my wife, she get is for .15$ a minute on her cell. Do not make any effort to call and inquire with a company. Your phone will ring 20 times a day and they will not leave you alone no matter what.

I guess it could happen someday, probably not in our lifetime..
Just me, but if this place becomes over infested with tourist, I will move to an even smaller place..
Are you using Skype for your calls back to the states?
I don't think my internet is fast enough to use it here from home, but tried it a few weeks ago from over in town.
It worked pretty good! :seasix:
In the past I have used the Yahoo call out service, and it only cost 1 cent a minute.
But often it was hard for the people I was calling to hear me, but again I blame it on the slow internet.

Yep, the audio and video works mostly good. The problem is, yes, the shitty up/down. Sometimes, we can only get the audio. But it's still free so there is that.

I bought a $20 card and ended up getting about an hours worth of phone time calling the Philippines.
When you first get on it says you have a great number of minutes, and guess if you use them all in just one call it would seem like a better deal.
But every time I would use it in multiple calls, they have a connect fee that eats up the minutes fast.

Joe, you'd hurt yourself here. There are so many fine young ladies and they are mostly good. I say that because no where is perfect. Although, this place will give it a run for it's money as far as wimmens.
