View Full Version : BMW's new tri-turbo, 376hp, 545tq diesel
From only 3.0 liters!
BMW M550d xDrive OFFICIAL - 2010 2011 BMW 5 Series Forum F10
THREE multi-stage turbos. Small one for low-rpm response, medium one for the midrange, and the big one must suck enough air to reduce the barometric pressure across an entire county. Even the dinky 265hp version of that motor runs on 30psi.
I would eat a dozen puppies to get an M550d.
But not available in the US.... :beat:
The first thing I'd do is remove the DPF, because bikers on the side of the road deserve to get the smoke-out treatment from a goddam 5 series.
0-62 in 4.7 - 5.3 seconds.
Not impressed.

Daaaamn. I'd take one of those in a heartbeat.
Not for the six figure price they will command.
F that.

Around $105,000.00 For that price I can get many cars that are much better.

For a whole lot less, I got 500ftlbs in my diesel truck and love it! I couldn't imagine 545 ftlbs in a car...oh wait it's probably similar to the 540 in my vette :-)

4.7 in a sedan that gets 44.8mpg.
5.3 in an SUV that gets 36.7mpg.
I am impressed.

It's a diesel thing... you wouldn't understand.
Think of it like a CTS-V with a lower redline-- and more torque off the line.
It's not about screaming top-end power, it's about seat-of-the pants power you use every day.
Oh and averaging around 27mpg combined (if they ever brought it here).
If you want the HP, you get the M5.
I love the 800 ft/lbs of torque in my diesel truck and it's quieter than a Lexus on the highway, but I still hate the filthy diesel pumps. Pretty sure Bimmer owners would be irritated with that, too.

They have bigger gallons in the UK.

Some of them are nasty, but at least I only have to be irritated by it a couple times a month.

good point.
I have gloves so the pumps are no big deal, but the concrete all around the pumps is usually a mess.
Apparently, the people who own diesel vehicles can't get all the fuel in the tank.

Things would be a hell of a lot easier if we just went to the metric system.

Part of it has to do with the low vapor pressure of diesel fuel. It's inability to easily evaporate (unlike gasoline) makes it more difficult to clean up.

amazingly they get an additional 60+% fuel economy out of those extra .76 gallons. ;)

They are higher in latitude and get additional pull from the moons gravitational forces.

I just figured it was lazy-ass truckers using autofill b/c it was a company fuel account.

For $105k, I would get a 911 or a Panamera. Those 4 door rolling abortions are kind of cool.

I like 'em OK, too.
Only thing is that if you drive one you have to start gelling your hair Pat Riley-style and wearin' skinny jeans.
And no cowboy boots, obviously.
It's a diesel thing... you wouldn't understand.
:skep: Yes, that must be it :skep:

I finally saw my first Panamera on the road today. Black, Bling aftermarket wheels, Texas plates. I've long contended there's no relationship whatsoever between disposable income and good taste. :puke:
That being said, $105,000 for a BMW chugger?
