Woman armed with bedpost fights off intruder
RALEIGH, N.C.- A burglary suspect wound up in the hospital with a broken ankle, cuts, bruises and a badly swollen eye after the victim bashed him in the face with a bedpost, authorities reported.
Lucio Medina Miranda, 40, of 2834 Avent Ferry Road, remained in custody at the Wake County jail Monday on charges of first-degree burglary, larceny after breaking and entering and felony possession of stolen goods, according to records filed at the Wake County Magistrate's Office. His bail is set at $108,000.
Federal immigration officials also have placed a retainer on him because they think he may be in this country illegally, a jail spokesman reported.
The burglary occurred just before 8:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at a residence on Dorothea Drive, just south of downtown.
Police have accused Miranda of breaking into the residence where a woman was at home with two small children, according to a search warrant filed Monday. The woman, armed with a bedpost, confronted the suspect and subdued him with multiple blows and then phoned 911, authorities reported. Miranda was still at the woman's home when the police arrived.
The woman and the two children were not injured during the incident, according to police spokesman Jim Sughrue. She could not be reached for comment on Monday.
Miranda had been in custody for nearly a week when police obtained a warrant on Thursday to search Miranda's belongings at the jail in an effort to locate the key to the victim's car. Among the items searched was a Buick key, court records show. :beat:
