What would you expect to pay/would be a fair price to have a ring sized? Assuming you bought the ring in a private transaction and not at a jewelry store.
Details:
- 14K White gold
- Current size 7
- Desired size 8
So it needs to be taken up 1 full size for the math challenged. I was quoted a price and I was surprised at the cost to say the least.
Thanks

I got my yellow gold ring sized from a 12 to a 13-1/2 and I paid $50 back in 1999

It's actually more expensive to reduce ring size as to increase. Increasing just requires the metal to be stretched... they don't add metal. Reducing requires the ring be cut and soldered - this usually requires the jewels to be removed so they are not damaged from heat.
I used to date a girl who's mother was a jeweler when I was in high school.

My ring had to be cut, a piece of gold added and soldered.

Is it a band?
School/college ring? (Big difference)
Have jewels set in it already?

1.5 sizing increase is substantial - depends on the thickness of the band; if there's enough metal to work with. One full size usually doesn't require cut and add.

True: I screwed up on a college ring size and got the ring too large. Cost a lot more than to have a ring moved up a size

I'll put up a pic tomorrow night of my ring. It's pretty thick and has an emerald mounted in it. ( a gift from my wife on our honeymoon :seasix: )

One size 14K gold we charge $45.00.
Any ring that has one or more gems set into it or has a head with a gem should always be cut and added to when sizing larger

So, what's the estimate you got????

If its a band you can have it streched,a ring will have to be cut and added to.

$122 + tax was the estimate I had been given.
I really wasn't familiar with the process, so if it does need to be cut and gold added then I can understand the cost.

$122 is ridiculous.

$122 is ridiculous.
Its 17.428% of the price I paid for the ring...not sure if I'll sell it and buy a new one already sized or not. Going to shop around a couple jewelers just to be sure on the price, even though I'm getting multiple hits that is spot on.

Haha...trust me....she's worth it. She deserves a ring 100x what I paid for that ring.

So here is some back story and good news for me...
I purchased this ring privately from a gentlemen who bought it at Kay's. Before he could propose he found out the girl was cheating on him. He was out of the return and exchange period, so decided to cut his losses.
I bought the ring at a deep discount, but figured I'd have no way of recouping the warranty.
Well I happened to be out today and stopped in at Kay's with the ring...explained the situation and they told me that in this case the warranty is transferable and they are resizing the ring for free per the warranty.
I had them check over the ring and they said it was in beautiful condition and confirmed that it appears to never have been worn, the prongs were good and the diamond looked great.

Not a baller ring, but I did pay cash for it :D I wish I could get her something bigger, but she is a pretty plain girl she does not get caught up in all fancy things. She said she would marry me with a cracker jack box ring as long as I picked it out. Now we just wait until the time is right to pop the question. I'm thinking later this year or so...I want to be sure I'm in a better position with my life before I talk to her father about it.

Don't worry about it, once you put the wedding band on, she'll grow into it anyway. :leaving:

I'm sure she will. Her current promise ring is 4 small round cut diamonds in a the marquise shape and she loves that...so I figured an actual marquise diamond would be just fine.
This is her promise ring;
