You would have thought that 17 PSI of fuel pressure would have cleared all that out :D

What the hell is it? Looks like cheese in there? Varnished up from sitting?

I am guessing a Rochester Quadrajunk.

4MV-4MC, M4ME-M4MC, or E4ME-E4MC? :bilmem:

year and model would help me figure it out though

Is that mechanical choke or electric choke versions? They do have different cfm versions as well I think.

They are all pretty much the same beast for rebuild purposes, with a few differences between the computer carbs and non computer, but I also want to get him the right info for settings if I can.

I got the rebuild kit and info from Cliff Ruggles.
The carb is a Rochester Quadrajet. Its off of a late model Dodge 360.
The white stuff is some paste-like sybstance that, from what I can find, is oxidized ethonal.

According to my research, soaking the carb in Coca-Cola will remove the deposits better than carb cleaner will.

If that were a wheel bearing instead of a carburetor you'd be good to go. It's packed with grease quite well. :seasix:

Except they aren't junk when they are set up properly.

Loved the quadrajet on my '72. Of course, I drove over 300 miles to have Lars Grimsrud set it up. :smash:

Runs as good as anything else once it is set up right

NO surprise here, I"v seen that crap before, not as BAD, but yes, and wanna know the terrible thing?? My Mom's '63 Olds F 85 215 cu in V8 2bbl sat for some 20 years in the garage, once I rebuild the brakes and the carb, it started and ran fine...guess what?? nothing like THAT crap buildup in there....

it did not like the gas much but got it down the road about 6 miles and topped off the tank with high test....smoothed out and sold the car....

NO ETHANOL to screw the pooch.....

Ethanol has cost my wife's car to go from 33 mpg to about 26-27 mpg....

'99 Escort, her driving....

Last carb I did came off a buddy's boat that looked almost that bad....carter AFB several months ago....had a fair amount of that shit in there...

I have a quadrajet that Lars rebuilt sometime back sitting on a shelf somewhere. If you want, I can try to dig it up. It ran fine the last time I used it.

Yeh, at first I thought it was condensate from humidity like we get here, and cold steel/iron but no, that was all over the outside of the carb, I had never seen anything like that on the INside....engine started/ran just fine, but would NOT take throttle, just died...

the Carter is a tad different with weight actuated secondary choke, all rusted/corroded and tons of that white crystal looking crap in there, it was all OVER the areas the gasoline was...float bowls....

I got lucky and managed to escape with no parts, but that was just after ONE season....I told him to remove the carb, clean the intake surface down put duct tape on it for winter, cover with a piece of PLYWOOD, or flat metal, and weight with a brick/similar nothing metallic to sweat on the wood....

so the carb is together now and all oiled up and ready for spring....but I have nothing else to say but ETHANOL and curse the .gov idiots....

I think the white gunk is a precipitate from mixing water and ethanol.

thanks for the offer.
Once I get this one cleaned up it should be usable though.

I dunked it in some Berryman Chem-dip 2 hours ago... all the white is gone.

probably let it soak until I get home from work tomorrow then rebuild it.

It worked fine when I had it on there... as long as I didn't drive more than 2 days in a row. Hoping the fuel pressure regulator takes care of that.
We'll have to see.

According to Cliff, it's a really strong carb and should be more than enough for the car.

Yup. The responsiveness of the small primaries is awesome and good for mileage (I would get 16 mpg with a 3.36 rear end and an M20). Nothing better than the sound of the huge secondaries opening up either. :cool1: :smash:
