A mother humpback whale and her yearling escorted an Hawaiian fishing boat for 400 miles as it returned to harbor. "It was neat to have some company out there," Winn [the boat captain] said. "We've been out for almost 20 days, so it was nice to have something to look at other than my crew."
Several agencies maintained a safety zone around the whales to prevent them from being struck by boats. After about seven hours of this tense situation, though, they left the harbor and were later seen off Waikiki.
