How would you guys do a border around the bar, I have to do a fireplace hearth on the other side of room. I am doing this job for my parents, they want to use smaller 6*6 tiles. Should I cut large tiles to form a straight line in front of bar and then install two rows of smaller tiles? The whole ones would be up against the large tiles and the cut ones up against bar.

Here is a picture of what I am up against:
Thanks for the help

Since the space along the X and Y axis is basically the same, I'd finish with some small "bricked shaped" tiles perpendicular to the fireplace. :cert:

I looked earlier and did not see anything that caught my eye or gave an idea

I'd continue the pattern as it is, then tile the bar.:yesnod:

I wanted to continue the pattern but noooo they want something that makes it look "non-standard". I did convince them to lay the tiles in a brick pattern, they wanted the standard corner to corner pattern. Cool idea on bar, but I have got to get out of there. Parents had a huge flood from a storm due to foundation drains failing. I have dug the outside and sealed the wall and I have had to re-frame the walls along with new Sheetrock. After I get the woodwork back up I have to remodel bathroom and then I am out of there. Been there every weekend for the last four months and I get the family rate pay....

wow-that sounds like a lot of work. Good on you for helping them out. Another thing you might consider are mosaic borders. They are available is a variety of styles and sizes. It would certainly make it "non standard", and in my opinion would look more "finished" than discontinuing the pattern, but using the same tile for trim.

I understand, I told Mom to pick something different for the border and low and behold they bring the same tile but smaller. :kick:

I mosaic is also a great idea. So would you even the one axis up and then lay in whatever is chosen?

I'd continue the pattern up to the edge of the mosaic trim (3, 4, or 5 inches from the bar, depending on what you select). I'd wrap the edges of the bar with the mosaic.

edit- make sure you don't end up w/ sliver cuts. Measure 1st, then select the trim size to avoid any slivers.

Gotcha, slivers are a PITA, I have one wall behind the bar that will have them, no way around it however. Is there ever an issue of having a cut tile out from bar when you grout it? Does it end up looking right?

Depends- I can't tell from the pic. Is it stone or porcelain? If stone (travertine) you can easily bevel the edges with a grinder and disc. If porcelain, and the other tiles have a significant bevel, you may notice. You can still bevel the sharp cut edge a little with a diamond pad or disc, or maybe even a carbide file.
