View Full Version : The Part I hate about my job

Entropy

It's Finals week, and usually things are not as stressful, as students are finishing up and are happy to be done. Work load is higher, but I've learned how to mitigate it as I've gotten more experienced.

The part I hate is when I have a student who misses a final and than starts dropping excuses. People are human, and they make mistakes.

When I accommodate and they miss it the second time and start dropping more excuses, I get pissed. Seriously pissed.

As you can imagine right now, I'm seriously pissed, and it's taking a lot to not email the clown back tearing up one side and down another. :cuss: :cuss:

Missing it twice?! Better have some pretty unquestionable proof....I typed a few out, but never could think of one that passed the smell test.

At first I thought maybe a canceled flight, but it's their fault for traveling close to an exam.
Death in the family? Doesn't explain the 2nd miss.
Stuck in a snow bank?! Should have been at the school early enough to be towed to location if need be.

I can't honestly think of ONE excuse where they could validly explain two misses. sounds like they're gonna fail that class.

At some point, young folk need to learn the consequences of their actions.

Nobody likes to be a hard-ass, but 2 absences is BS.

No real reason to miss the exam, I already know when my exam is for the spring semester and it hadn't even started yet. I am happy I am done with exams, now it's 4 weeks of vacation, to enjoy to its fullest

I was taking a final for a class and about 15 minutes after it started, a kid came walking in with cuts, scrapes and blood all over him. He apologized for being late and asked if he could still take the exam. With a WTF look our prof asked what happened...

Mofo was riding his bike to the test and rode out in front of a campus bus and got hit! :willy:

Does your student's excuse top getting hit by a f'n bus on the way to the test? If not... fail 'em.

They'd have to be hit by the bus TWICE.

Excuse #1. He missed it because he forgot when it was scheduled. Emailed me when the exam was 3/4 over.

We discussed it over email, and he said he would come in the morning and take it.

Now he claims that his tires got slashed, and that delayed him all day. :toetap: No phone calls or emails at all.

When the exam didn't show up in campus mail early this afternoon, I went over to the test center to check things out about 4:30. It was there and still hadn't been taken. I grabbed it and brought it back to my office.

He got to the test center about 10 minutes after I was there, but I had already left for home. Lit up my email, but I didn't get it until about 30 minutes ago.

Ted, unless there is an amazing story with proof, I'm gonna go with "See ya next semester, dude/dudette". Don't waste any more time. Next!

Edit:

I just saw the details. Any way to get proof of slashed tires? All the kids have phones with cameras now. I'd be surprised if he didn't FB them if it's true.

Tell him he has to take his test at The Vette Barn (http://www.thevettebarn.com),
and that he will be grilled by the current members. Also, we'll decide if he gets a passing grade.

But, why not write him a graduate/doctorate level test..this could be entertaining.

My best student this semester almost missed the second exam when his slave cylinder took a dump on his way to class. He had to walk/run the last 5 miles to get to the exam on time, but he made it. Got the best grade in the course to boot.

1. It the above happened, fuk the class and the test. I would not give a shit.

2. When (or if) this little bastard graduates and gets a job, is he going to let small shit get in the way of accomplishing his job / task?

Kids these days and most adults are completely fuking worthless. People can't solve problems or figue out how to accomplish their assigned task.

What was his sole purpose today? It should have been to take the exam. Get there and take the exam. Period. No matter what.

I say fail the little bastard. If there is proof of the tires being slashed, I would let him take the test with the understanding that he will get 15% off his grade.

If it were me- I would have failed him after he missed the 1st exam.

"I forgot" is just not an excuse. I would have rather his tell me " I just don't give a shit" because that is the truth.

You have posted about this before at Banned Camp. I remember the chick who just didn't give a **** and then tried to save her grade at finals time with all the excuses and I remember (could be the same chick) that missed finals and then posted on Facebook pictures of her partying her ass off the night before finals and then tried to use the excuse her grandma died or something like that.

I can only go with what I see at work, and the younger generation in my family. Hard workers who contribute.

:iagree: Son works two jobs, same field, two different facilities. Daughter is taking a double-Engineering major in College and works a PT job. She's pulling a 3.6- even though she failed her Physics class this term. (I had to majorly put my "dad" hat on and convince her to calm down, everything was going to be just fine). Most of their friends have similar stories. I see lazy kids in this generation, but not all of them.

In H.S., I once skipped a chem II test I was ill prepared for. Blamed it on my buddy not showing up to give me a ride (who also skipped the test, although we skipped independent of one another).

Yes, we both got to do a make up test, naming compounds that did not exist in nature. I was like, WTF is this? Scary stuff. Object lesson learned. There was not a 2nd skip, any time.

One winter morning it was 6 degrees and icy. I had to ride my motorcycle to take a circuits final. My clutch cable broke before I got out of my driveway. I had to sit at lights with my back tire spinning on the ice because I was afraid to put it in neutral. About 1/2 mile from the college I saw a bad wreck happen. A jeep with two chicks spun out and hit a VW Beetle. The jeep went down a steep ravine an the guy in the VW was screaming because he was trapped and gas was pouring into the passenger compartment.

About that time my professor comes by and he grabbed a tire tool. Before he went to pry on his door I took my coat off, shed my shirt, and wrapped the tool with it thinking sparks would be very bad. We got the guy out safe but covered in gas and blood. The girls were ok. I went to take my final without a shirt.

My professor passed them out and handed me one pre-graded! 100% I went down to the union and bought a tshirt.

If he brought me pictures and receipts, I still wouldn't budge at this point.

The total lack of communication is really the lesson here. I'm a pretty nice guy when I know what's going on. Cut me out of the loop, and I'll piss on you as soon as look at you. Especially if I think you're putting me on.
