View Full Version : Today's wound from my kitties

These are today's scratches from my new feral kittens. These are from Bandit (Smoky's bro), who is proving to be a tough nut to crack. Smoky started out very aggressive, but quickly became a sweet boy. Bandit didn't seem that wild at the beginning (they're both feral), but he still doesn't like to be caught; that's when the scratching happens.

My taming method is to first catch them, then put them inside my jacket for a few hours at a time, where I pet them and talk to them. It helps to hum or sing softly while they're close to you. They usually fall asleep.

http://i702.photobucket.com/albums/ww22/lspencer534/smokyandbro.jpg

I then let them leave my jacket on their own. They emerge from my jacket like, "WTF? Is this a trick or something?". The danger of having two at different stages is that the tame one can become feral again. That's a risk I'm taking because they love to play together so much. So far, so good.

Anyway, bless their little souls. "Kittens are angels with whiskers."

I posted that in the last kitty wounding thread. Sounds like you get dibs on posting in the next one (and based on the OP's luck with feral cats, there WILL be a next time).

Luckily I heal quickly. Since I take Plavix (blood thinner) there's a lot of blood but no serious damage.

Maybe we should just pull the old threads up and recycle them.
I guess Larry really should go after ones that don't have teeth and claws.:leaving:

Scratches are easy. I get those all the time from some of our rescues who play just a tad to rough. The things to worry about are bites that break the skin and bleed. Infection from one of those can be a real biotch. BTDT.

Good on you though. I think your KARMA account must be amazing for all of God's little creatures you have taken in:seasix:

Thanks! I know you're right about bites, but in my 30 years of rescuing ferals, I've been bitten, clawed, and mangled. Never had an infection. I do keep my tetanus shots up to date, and I know that the next bite could be trouble. Kitties do have to learn to temper their bites and scratches in the name of playing, and eventually I teach them that. Very young ones, though, do get a bit overly rambunctous.

Sounds like you have a full blown kitty insurgency going on over there. Apparently the "winning hearts and minds" is going a little slower than you had hoped.

Watch out for the IPD's (improvised poop devices). They may be in your shoes.

Long time ago I had a former feral I named Ben. One day I came home and found him hanging like a bat from one of my suits in the closet. I spanked his butt and he ran downstairs. The next morning I discovered he had pissed in my shoes. :D
