Interesting. I've found that the Canadian system was better than in the US. McGill University is one of the top dental schools in North America.

I'm not saying their dentists are bad, just that the Canadians that I've spoken to in my chair say the "free" system is hard to get care under because dentists don't want to participate because of the crappy reimbursement, and people mostly end up with huge, failing fillings. I've heard, again first-hand, that a lot of citizens will choose to go the private route and pay out of pocket anyway since the care is more comprehensive.

Gotcha. When I lived in Canada, dental insurance wasn't "free" like medical insurance. I paid premiums via payroll deductions. What was nice was that dental offices were connected electronically to the insurance companies so dental claims were filed immediately, with no out of pocket costs.
