:iagree:
They are seriously out competing local predators. I admire their adaptablility, but they are a serious strain on the environment, as well as killing off pets and livestock.

I am against killing animals for any reason other than food, but they are one of the very few exceptions. ...and snakes. I f**king hate snakes.

Pretty much all the people teaching hunting safety courses in this area are advocating taking the coyotes out. They were causing some serious problems in suburban areas and are still causing issues here in Central Texas.

I hate any demon spawn snake. I'll risk scaring off a kill to rid myself of a snake anywhere in my vicinity. Nasty vile creatures. Every damn one of them.

You people really need to change your mode of thinking, do you realize how overun the earth would be with mice and rats if it wasn't for them?

Generally you don't bother them they won't bother you. Everybody finds one in their garage or whatnot, it's your fault you got rats, that's why he's there in the first place. Shoo the thing away with a long stick and he'll never be seen again.

:yesnod: We only have non-poisonous varieties of snakes, and they keep the rodents under control. I usually have to shoo one or two of them off of the lawn before I mow (yellow racers). Plenty of coyotes, deer, racoons, possums, and some really cool raptors (hawks and owls) living in the woods behind us.
Not cool to shoot them around here- have to go about a mile further out. Oddly, I think the coyotes know this.

Morals and reasoning aside, I care not for snakes. The ones near me either need to leave or I dispatch them. Seeing as how we have mostly rattlers around here I have no use for them. I accidentally stepped on a cotton mouth while training on the Land Nav Course at Ft. Benning about 10 years ago. The damn thing looked like a stick, scared the piss out of me and that thing ended up dead (reactionary butt stroke with my rifle). Thank god I had on my thick winter boots or my training event would have been over.
Lecture me all you want, but my attitude towards snakes isn't changing.

Laugh all you want. I always have The Handle with me when out in the woods and well, damn near everywhere else, too. DJ don't play with poisonous animals or go out of the way to be near them.

You stepped on him, what in the hell did you expect him to do? Shine your boots?

I had a rat snake bite me on the ankle after I stepped on it wearing flipflops. And yes, I killed it, just because I was PO'd. Later I thought..Hmmm, I STEPPED on it, what is it supposed to do? It's also an endangered species.....my bad! :sadangel:

I'm at work and we have a long narrow covered break area alongside the building. I spotted a raccoon walking around the building and went to the end to see where he went. I had my phone and was going to take a photo of it when it came right at me. I had to kick at it to shoo it away.
It went away by some small trees along the adjacent building then came right back at me! This time I swung at it with my purse and it went up into the small trees. Both times it got within a foot of me. I have video of the first time.
Obviously it is not afraid of people. It's still daylight too. I reported it and told some other people not to go out there. I think they're going to try and trap it.Various Photos :: Raccoon_1273.mp4 video by Beadist - Photobucket

You're too kind. I saw three working a herd of whitetail in the local state park last week on my way back from the range. I was packing my .44 magnum with full house loads but knew that shooting anything there would cost me $10,000 + jail time + loss of hunting privileges.
On a walk in the neighborhood recently, I encountered 4 strolling down the street and yesterday there was a whitetail buck walking down the block. When he saw me, the tail popped up, he popped up and split, back to the park (My house adjoins a golf course that borders on a 6,000 acre state park).
All I want for Christmas is an Elk tag...tra, la....

It's lawful to discharge a firearm as long as you are more than 150 yards from inhabited dwellings, unless you have permission from the nearby owner. Our nearest neighbor is 142 yards from our front porch. And I have her verbal permission.
My 5.56mm would be a good choice, but it wasn't handy.

I didn't try to step on him. It was March and the rains turned the trails into wet GA clay. I was stepping on sticks to keep my footing and keep from sinking in the mud. Yes, it was that bad and the damn snake looked like a huge stick. It didn't move until I stepped on it and thank God I stepped pretty close to it's neck and ended up holding the head in place. i still killed the damn thing out of sheer reaction and a need to clean my shorts.

Distemper maybe? I've seen the police in South Haven, MI shoot one that wouldn't crawl away from people and did something like what you said. It took Barny fife three direct hits with his The Handle and a shot gun to dispatch it

I'm sure it was an accident, anyone who intentionally goes and stomps on a snake deserves whatever he gets plus an overwhelming need to have his head examined.
