I took the wifes car in for new tires this morning and ended up spending 2 hours there even though I had an appointment. The wife calls while I am there and asks me to get the oil changed as well because she hasn't changed it in about 7k miles. I told her I would but after being in the tire shop for 2 hours I didn't feel like dealing with it so I peeled the old oil sticker off the window, reset the oil life monitor and called it good.

In my defense the car is a lease with 8 months left so it's OK, right? :D

Does anybody that leases a car ever change the oil until right before turn-in?

If good synthetic oil was put in it you're good for about 15K total.

Only matters if you have a conscience and can sleep at night. The fact that you posted about it tells me something.

I'm still having a hard time understanding why haven't you trained the wife to change the oil in it in the first place.

You guys are right, I'm a bad husband. I'm going to go set things straight with the wife as soon as I'm done folding this load of laundry. :seasix:

15k miles on synthetic with a good filter is just fine if you don't flog the car to shit.

I know that part... it is the general lack of give-a-f**k about the car that it the issue.

It's a lease. OP don't give two shits and holler about it. :confused5:

I have clients (car finance/lease companies) tell me they have had lease turn-ins that apparently haven't had an oil change for the term of the lease--36-48 mos. Some of them had 2 quarts of oil in them. Plus the cheapest narrowest tires the lessee could find. None of them ever got waxed.

A buddy of mine works at NOAA. He works with some very smart people. With that said, one didn't know there is more to a BMW than just putting gas in and driving it. :D

Which is exactly why I'd never buy a car from my father since he believes that too. I use Mobil 1 with a great filter in all of my vehicles. The longest I'll go is around 5k and the oil looks like shit. I'll admit that I can be anal about maintaining my vehicles, but hell, it's ~$30 and 15 minutes of my time.

Why would you put a pair of NEW tires on a lease car going back in 8 months?

Call around and find a couple used but serviceable tires (preferably the same tires you have on the other axle), slap them on and call it a day. I would have gone ahead and changed the oil, anyway, but that would just be me. If you didn't agree in your lease contract to fastidiously change the oil, then don't worry about it. If you did agree, then change it right before it goes back, and hope the engine doesn't sieze up in the meantime.

I feel the same way. For ~$30 and 30 minutes, it's worth it to me. That being said, I keep my vehicles a long time.

Until she gets the bill for the tires and there is no charge for an oil change, you got to think of everything to cover your butt.

Nothing was confusing. OP doesn't look at this as a responsibly because it's a lease. WGAF if the maintenance is done correctly in his eyes.

It's because he doesn't want her to get her hands dirty when she should be making him a sandwich.

Because the oil companies tell them to.

Yep, and so does that little numb-nuts that puts those stickers on the inside of the windshield.
