This happened in Santa Cruz, CA yesterday, I believe. Humpback whales are feeding on anchovies close to shore; the whales herd anchovies and then lunge-feed on them, breaking the surface with open mouths. At least one kayaker has been capsized and a sailboat was struck by a whale.

Not even close enough to make a wake for either of them.

Whales actually don't leave much wake; otherwise it would spread the collection of prey. Photog says whale was 20' from the people.

Oh let's go play near the feeding whales. Dumbasses. Maybe they complain about traffic while they're playing in the road too.

I have to agree. It's pretty easy to tell where the whales are by the accumulation of birds chasing the anchovies before the whale lunges. A grown humpback can weigh 50 tons and reach 50' in length. I'd give it the right-of-way.

This video shows the pier to the north of the people. There is not any good break there so they were out there only to look at the whales.
All of the decent surfing is north of the pier. Steamer's probably isn't breaking yet, but it is one of the premier winter spots in CA.
