Man Going For Newspaper Swallowed By Sinkhole

8-Foot Sinkhole May Have Been Old Well, Cesspool

POSTED: 10:13 am EDT November 1, 2011

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. -- A Long Island, N.Y., man heading out to his lawn for his morning paper made headlines himself this weekend when he was swallowed up by an 8-foot sinkhole.

Michael Ciron, of Oceanside, was not seriously injured in the fall and even boasted that he held on to the newspaper, Newsday reported.

The 80-year-old was later rescued by fire crews using a harness after his 24-year-old daughter heard his screams for help from the large hole.

As for the origins of the sinkhole, both father and daughter told Newsday that they believe it may have been the remnants of an old well or cesspool.

That appears to be a pretty small diameter sinkhole.
He's lucky the headline wasn't "80 Year Old Man Missing."

I just found a small one in my yard. Was walking along and sunk up to my knee.
I found one once with my F-250, abandoned septic D-box. Truck sank up to the bumper.
