I don't do themed puzzles, so anyone wanting a Halloween-oriented puzzle is SOL! Grab a beer, and no Googling!
1. My friend Russell is about as laid back as you can get. He doesn't own a watch or a cell phone. He even unplugged the clock in his car.
Recently, he visited this bookstore near his house. First, he checked out the café. Then he drifted over to the periodicals area where he perused his favorite golf publication. After considerable browsing he finally made a purchase and left.
As soon as he got his car on the highway he remembered that his sister had invited him over for dinner. Now, Russell's sister is one uptight pain-in-the-butt clock watcher, and if he showed up late for dinner, she'd kill him. He began to sweat. 'What if I spent too much time in the bookstore?' he worried.
In a panic, poor Russell reached for the book that he had just bought. Within moments, his fear had abated. He wouldn't be late after all. What was in that book that set his mind at ease?
2. An American nightclub called 'The Coconut Grove' had a terrible fire in which over 400 people died. A simple design flaw in the building led to the death toll being so high. Subsequently, regulations were changed to ensure that all public buildings throughout the country eliminated this one detail which proved so deadly. What was it?
3. I saw a license plate on a convertible said WEIGHT, W-E-I-G-H-T. And I wonder, "What kind of a car would have a license plate that said WEIGHT?"
4. Several months ago, Joe was hanging out at one of his favorite haunts, Logan Airport in Boston, sipping cappuccino and feeling sorry for all those people dragging suitcases around and racing to catch airplanes.
Suddenly, he saw his old college roommate in the crowd. He couldn't remember the guy's name, and before he could signal to him, his old chum disappeared in the crowd.
'Gee,' Joe thought, 'that's too bad! I would have liked to say hello, and I'm sure he still wants his 200 bucks back that I borrowed from him all those years ago.'
Joe couldn't remember the guy's name, just that he lived in the Midwest someplace. He ran to the monitor and scanned the list of flights. As he was standing there, he got an idea. Two minutes later, he was reunited with his friend. What did Joe do?
5. I once worked as a delivery truck driver. The truck I drove was about 25 feet in length. One of the places that I routinely delivered to required that I pull into a narrow alley in order to unload my truck. One cold January day after making my delivery I discovered that my battery was as dead as a hammer.
Another delivery driver had pulled into the alley right behind me and I asked if he had a set of jumper cables and a strong battery that I could use. He did but the jumper cables were only 16-feet long and wouldn't reach from his battery to mine. The alley was too narrow to park the truck with the good battery next to mine, and my truck was too heavy to be pushed into a better position. Then I struck upon an idea that allowed us to get my truck started in only a few short minutes. What was the idea? [You have to use the jumper cables.]
6. Mike decided to go for a ride yesterday in a new neighborhood. The neighborhood has many long, steep hills, and on the way down one hill Mike decided to downshift to avoid over-heating his brakes. He went from 5th gear to 3rd but didn't slow down. Puzzled, he shifted to 2nd gear...no change. His brakes were hot and weak, but managed to get in 1st gear, and his speed was still increasing! He did make it to the bottom safely, but what was going on???
7. No question--just enjoy:
