Received just now on Facebook.

Steve has been in ICU for going on 10 weeks now and I wanted to send and update and make a request of his friends.

His rheumatoid arthritis has complicated and delayed his recovery from pneumonia with he got back in August. He is receiving chemotherapy to stop the progression of the rheumatoid arthritis that has attacked his lungs. So far he has made some progress in getting better but has a long way to go.

He had to have a tracheotomy so he can no longer speak. He had to have a feeding tube put in to provide food so he can no longer eat. He has lost over 50 pounds and doesn’t look like himself anymore. He can barely move and open his eyes and some days they have him paralyzed just to keep him breathing with the respirator.

My mother, brother and I are trying to get him moved to a long term care facility and out of that same ICU room he has been since August. In the meantime he needs your support. I am asking of his friends that you go see him if you are in Victoria. He is at Detar Hospital in the ICU room 7. Visiting hours are at 12 noon, 2 pm, 6pm, and 8pm. Sometimes it takes a while for them to open the doors to ICU and you will only get about 20 minutes to see him.

Some days he has no visitors other than my mom who can only come see him at night. Some days the nurses won’t even turn the TV on for him and he sits and looks at the clock all day. He is very lonely. A visit from a friend will do him so much good. On the days when he is alert he can smile, wink and nod his head so he can be responsive. If you aren’t in Victoria you can send a card to my mom and she can read it to him and put it in his room. You can send a card to her at: 208 Woodlands Lane Victoria, Texas 77904, just address it to her Donna Eddleman and write on the front, card for Steve. He cannot receive calls, check e-mail or Facebook so he doesn’t know if you are thinking of him.

If you love Steve, and a lot of people do, please help. Thanks, Shelly (his daughter)

Thank you for the update!

I think it would be very nice to send him something from Vette Barn, for sure. We need to check to see if flowers are allowed, though. Alot of times ICU doesn't allow them.

I hope Uncle P pulls through. It makes me so sad that he, and his family, are going through this. :(

Flowers aren't allowed in ICU and some hospitals don't even allow balloons. I know that when my coworker Beth was in ICU her family had to pay for parking every time they went to visit which really racked up a lot of money. I am sure sending cards and maybe some cash to offset some costs would be appreciated.
Prayers and thoughts going out for a speedy recovery.

I just sent an email to the hospital asking them to turn on his tv. I said it was just about his only link to the outside world and it was important to him.

I did this buy googling the hospital and using the "contact us" service. I guess I could have called them. Perhaps we all should ask the hospital nicely to do that for steve.

It will be tomorrow before they get it, if I am lucky.

Damn, that was a hard read. My prayers are of course with Unk, but does anyone know him personally? Like, how old is he, what was his health like prior to this incident, his prognosis? He's a friend of mine here; he said the we have similar senses of humor, which I take as a high compliment.

I met him and hung out with him at CI in 2006.
He brought me a moon pie and an RC Cola

Yes. He's a pretty darn handsome, white-headed guy. Not even 10 yrs older than I am. Way too young to be so sick. Come on Pervey....pull through, man!!!

We can request the tv be left turned on during the day. I do recommend having the tv turned off from 11p-7a though because patients lose track of time and will get disoriented if it's not turned off. Some patient's even get what we call ICU psycosis because they never know when it's day vs night. Also, most hospitals have it where music plays from the tv so that could be turned onto something appropriate during the nighttime in case he wakes up so it drowns out the noise from the machines.

He was at the 2005 and 2006 CI. I missed the 2005 one, but met him in 2006.

Lots of pics here on the corvettemuseum website... National Corvette Museum Events (http://www.corvettemuseum.com/cruisein/index.shtml)
Lots of people we know there, especially interesting for anyone who attended.

Here's one good pic I found of UP, on the right in the blue shirt...

I'm going to go buy 14 cards tomorrow and send out one a day with a little note. If my work schedule isn't so crazy this weekend, I'm thinking of driving down there to see him. I've never met him and it's time I do something I've wanted to do for a long, long time.

<For everyone>
Official update...
As you know the old man has been under heavy sedation since they put in the tracheotomy tube. Last week they started to cut back his sedation to see how he would respond. He became a lot more aware and was able to use head gestures to indicate yes/no. The problem is that as he became more aware, he started having a lot of anxiety and would start fighting the vent. They made a decision on Saturday to push him back down. They have told me that he is very close to being 'out of the woods', but they feel they need a few more weeks and some more chemo to really be sure. He supposed to be getting transferred out of the hospital ICU and into a critical care unit at a rehab facility. My mom and I have been weighing our options as to where to move him. There is a really nice rehab center that has agreed to take him, but as with all things in Victoria there is an issue. Only one of his docs will visit that facility and that one is about to leave town for a couple of weeks. So in order to allow all of his doctors to continue treating him, we are going to have to move him to a facility that is associated with the current hospital. Both my mom and I agree that it will be a temporary move and as soon as we can get him off of the vent we will have him moved to the other facility. All he needs to do is keep making good progress and the rest will take care of itself.

Eric

Hang in there, Pervey.

I wish the best for the family as well. I went through this with my father almost three years ago. I can barely type this without crying.

God Bless.
