It's a Dell Optiplex 360, built in 2009. Browser is IE. ISP is Comcrap. Here's my problem: It's never been lightning fast, but lately it varies from okay speed to excrutiatingly slow. Lots of times I get "Internet Explorer cannot open this webpage"--like one out of every 10 tries. When the speed is okay it stays okay for a while, then gets slow. The basic issue is connecting to a site; once it gets there, it's okay...for a while.
Techs looked at it remotely today, removed 2 viruses that were "nothing serious". No change. Comcast's performance has been checkered; last year I would have no internet access for days at a time until they replaced the cable to my house. Everything was fine until now. Comcast gave my modem a bump today, no change.
Should I try changing to AT&T DSL? Different browser? Please...I've already told you more than I know about computers, so try to keep it simple.

Do the easy things first.
1. Reboot.
2. Try Firefox or Chrome (different browsers)
How long has it been since you've done a fresh install of your operating systems (probably Windows)? If it's been over a year, I recommend saving your important stuff, reformatting, and doing a fresh install.
If none of those work, look into your Internet Service Provider.

Loosen the harddrive hold down clamp, then slightly rotate the harddrive until the timing marks on your CPU align correctly while strobeing them with the timing light. You may want to advance it slightly if you are running a lean mixture of memory.

Different browsers will help see if it's spam.
Speedtest will give you real numbers you can compare against what you pay for.
Sometimes I need to reset all my equipment. That might point to a problem with it. Or if you reboot is it initially better?

The first thing to figure out is if it's the computer or the Comcrap slowing down. Have you used any other computers on the connection and do they act normal? Is the Dell just slow on the internet and normal when doing tasks that aren't online?

If I was a betting person, I'd go with comcrap. They have to be the worst at everything they do or should I say suppose to do.

Yeah like you aren't enjoying every minute of it.

Yes.

Ping is 182, download speed is 912. It's hard to pinpoint a slow time because the intervals are varied, from a few seconds to several minutes.

Haven't tried another computer. Slowness is internet only.

Wow..that's pretty bad! My ping is 22ms with a download of 25.27Mbps!
What service speed are you supposed to have?

:yesnod: That's your problem. 3-digit ping numbers are unheard-of on a working line.
It's your cable service's fault. Might be the wire. Does the wire run through trees, and do you have squirrels ?? Last time I had a cable problem, it was because squirrels had chewed on the wire. Could be lots of other things, but all of them are the cable company's responsibility to fix.

Sounds like your fuel lines are too small.
Problem is they can't be fixed without doing a whole bunch more work, which cost a lot more money.
Not worth it.
May as well just trade up.
Kabbish!

The line is overhead as it comes down my driveway, then it goes underground from the last pole to my house (about 75'). Earlier this year Comcast replaced the line from the street to my house (about 500'). We do have lots of squirrels. Thanks!

You mean the lines leading to my blinker fluid, don't you? Fuel lines, my butt! I know a little bit about cars!

Think of it as an echo...through nice clean air you hear the echo come back pretty fast and clear. Through jello it takes longer and is muddled.
You have jello for an Internet connection right now. Call their tech support.

How far is your modem from the first line of entry in to the house.
eg. Does the line come in the basement and your modem is hooked up on the second floor?

I was just wondering why it varies in speed. :confused5: Not disputing what you said at all, just curious.

Lots of variables. When your request leaves your computer it may hop to 10 or 12 routers on it's way to the destination server.
Open a command prompt and type in "tracert www.thevettebarn.com" (without the quotes), each hop is a router or other system that your request is having to go through. You may see one that has a really high set of pings (the first three sets of numbers). If you do, that router or host is what is causing your delay, and it could vary over time, depending upon the load at than juncture.

Distance from entry to modem is less than 30'. Comes in the first (and only) floor.

Maybe Lander knows better but is there a way you can attach the modem closer to the Point of entry and see if anything changes. I've always understood it's better to have a longer run from the modem to computer, than vice versa.
I've also had a bad cable(the one that connects my computer to the modem) that have wreaked havoc on my connection.

Don't know how I do that. Entry cable goes direct to the attic, and I can't imagine the temps up there would help a modem.
BTW, this may be my last post; it's gotten so slow that it's frustrating.

For giggles, try another pooter on your network or try your machine on another network.
I forgot to ask if you have run all the malware removal stuff.
PS: I hate squirrels more than Pete likes alcohol.

I'm been waiting on your post! I figured there'd be a deep, sarcastic yet undeniably witty, searing reply. Damn, I'm disappointed!
Yep, ran the malware, found nothing. Uh...where do I conveniently find another computer to run on my network?
