Tonight I became a victim of credit card fraud. Got an email from Discover telling me to call them in regards to suspicious account activity. Seems some jabroni tried to use my credit card information in Austin, Tx (I live in OKC, OK) at a Wal-Mart tonight for around $180. Then a few minutes later tried to use it again for around $190. This prompted them to reject the second charge and send me the alert.
Hopefully it's not going to be a big deal. It sucks I won't have a new card for 10 days. I use it for 99% of my transactions.
Anything else I should look in to?

Glad they caught it quickly. My visa got skimmed a few years back and they got away with $44,000 worth of charges before fraud kicked in. I had to file a police report.

DAMN!!!! :omg:
The girl on the phone said they would credit the two charges and I shouldn't have any issues once I get the new card. She said they'll send me some material in the mail in regards to their investigation.
I'm curious how they used my info in Texas. Did they create a physical card with my information or was it an employee trying to enter something manually? I'm not sure what the norm is on these things.
I do use the card online at times, so that does make it a lot more vulnerable to things like this. Hopefully they just got this information and not anything else. The only other card I use is my bank debit card.

You might want to add a temporary fraud alert with the credit bureaus, in case said Jabroni tries some funny business in your name.
If you notify one, it should propagate.

Never EVER use a Debit card online (not even debit cards that are also credit cards)! Any security expert will tell you that. You use credit cards ONLY online. Hackers love it when they get a debit card. There is inherently less security in using a debit card (although the bankers love to tell you it's just as safe as using a credit card, but that's bull).
A debit card is a pipeline to your bank account - your checkbook. That card should only be used for store purchases and the card should NEVER leave your sight. I wouldn't even use one on a gas pump, or the computers running them, are very commonly compromised in large cities.
Also NEVER use a debit card in a restaurant (it breaks the "never let the card out of your sight" rule). Restaurants are still the #1 way to get a credit card number stolen. For that reason I usually pay cash at restaurants unless it's a place I've done a lot of business with, or I will use my CC which gives me zero hassle if I have to make a fraud claim. Recently, the other activity we've seen is the restaurant changing the tip amount and adding more. We left a $5 tip only to discover 3 days later that it was doubled. We had to call the restaurant and complain to get the $5 back.
Any junk mail you get should be shredded including those CC offers. Too much scum out there going through trash cans looking for any personal information.

That's what sucks. I use my credit card for everything. I carry my debit card, but hardly ever use it. I feel like I left the house without my cell phone not having my credit card on me. It's crazy.

Looks like Discover did a good job,I work for a bank and we are constantly looking for fraud on CC's ,it is amazing at all the ways you can have your acct. numbers leaked. Becareful of Restaurants ,sometimes they have employees that can write down your acct. numbers. Also when buying on line make sure the line is secure.

I won't even possess a Debit Card. My banks keep trying to convince me to take one but I refuse. With a credit card, if you have the discipline to pay off the balance every month, you can get up to about 50 days (plus or minus depending on your provider) "float" on your money. In the past 15 years I have not paid any interest, overcharge or late fees on any of the cards I have. Plus, I have accumulated and used thousands of "points" that provided significant discounts (40 - 50%) off items I have purchased. And, I always checked regular prices in other places before "cashing in" the points on the items I have gotten to make sure there was really a savings benefit.
On line I use a program that my CC provider provides to generate secure online card numbers. Each number can be used for only one transaction with one merchant. Any subsequent transactions are automatically blocked.
