My father is very much into genealogy.
He was working on our family tree when he noticed two entries with an unusual name.
Turns out... My seventh great-grandfather on both my father's side and my mother's side... is the same person.
Not just the same name... it's the same person.

While my mom was researching her side of the family, she came across one branch of the family tree where three generations died within four days back in the 1890s.
She contacted the county seat ( iirc, Idaho ) and talked to a lady in the records department to see if she could find out anything. The lady said she'd be glad to research it.
Turns out the grandfather refueled the kerosene/coal oil heater while it was still burning and it caught fire. Both grandparents, the parents and a few children all were burned and succumbed to their injuries. :sadangel: :sadangel: :sadangel:
The grandfather was the last to die.

My first wife and I were married for about eight years. We were at a large family function with both sides of the family. My grandmother asked about a man there who was my wife's grandfather. Turns out he fathered a child out of wedlock with my grandmother's niece. Hmmm...
So your family has been swimming in it's own gene pool?? Interesting.

My Aunt researched our family history and came up with several interesting facts:
I am the end product of hard working white trash on my grandmothers side of the family. Dirt poor, mean as hell, with some mental illness thrown in for good measure.
On my Grandfathers side, we had family on both sides of the Civil War, Carpet Baggers after the war.
My Great Uncle was killed during a bank hold-up.
But then again, he was the one robbing the bank, and a bank guard(?) or Police officer smoked his ass.
We put the fun in dysfunctional. :D
All I have in my family history is Larry Bird, Mary Todd Lincoln and the last Prince of Bavaria. :leaving:

My stepdad is doing his side of the family ( his dad left russia before the revolution. he was raising money to build a hydro-electric dam--he later worked for DuPont as an engineer ). Some of the older relatives said that the one sister was completely worthless and never made anything of her life.
He was talking with a great aunt that was 102 years old and she "oh no, they're just jealous of her"
She brought out some pictures and letters that showed her in a bank picture front & center ( executive) and some of the letters she wrote on bank stationary that had her position on them.
Due to the lies of a jealous family, he has a couple chapters of his book to rewrite.

My wife's family is from Kentucky on the WVA border. Common great great great garndfather also. Moving on to more modern times her father and his two brothers married her mom and her two sisters (Gobels, all from Buthcer Hollow...all related to Loretta Lynn). It's complicated. Gives the term double cousins a whole new meaning. I saw 2nd & third cousins who looked like identical twins at their family reunion. The Blue Grass band which was quite good completed the family scene. The next day we went to Lorretta Lynns home place Paintsville, KY. Saw a book store in the town called "Words n' Stuff". It was down the road from homes with real ringer washing machines on the front porch and used broken down Buick Vista Cruisers as hog pens in the yards. Not a town set up as a quaint tourist attraction. It was the real thing.

Quebecers said perfect gene pool for medical research
TORONTO (Reuters) - Quebecers, many of them descended from a handful of families who arrived from France, could hold the key to medical breakthroughs as their tiny gene pool provides the perfect testing ground for researchers and pharmaceutical firms.
John Hooper, chief executive of Genizon BioSciences Inc., a privately owned Montreal biotech company, told Reuters in an interview on Friday that the population of the French-speaking Canadian province has remained relatively isolated over the last 250 years. The small gene pool is a dream for scientists seeking cures for genetic diseases, he added.
"Almost all French Canadians today are derived from that group that expanded essentially in isolation until the 1950s," Hooper said.
"It means that the genes of this group of 2,600 people are replicated in many people, so you have a large population carrying very similar genes. That's the kind of things that geneticists love."
