View Full Version : Krav Maga? Or ???

My son has a black belt in TKD. Not from a belt factory either. Took him 5 years to earn it. He's been training with a grand master who has produced two Olympic gold medalists.

But I think it's getting sort of pointless. He's not interested in competing but martial arts is part of his lifestyle.

I think he would like to start learning more of a useful (i.e., defense) martial art.

What OT think?

Krav Maga?
Brazilian Ju Jitsu?
Akido?
???

Kenpo :yesnod:

One of the guys I used to work with is working on his third degree black belt. From what he explained and showed me, it looks to be very good for self defense. No wasted moves with maximum infliction of pain/damage.

Krav or aikido. He's going to have to find what works for him.

You better be working on something or he's gonna kick your ass.

Serious. You'll be his bitch by the time he's twelve

Classics Jujitsu if he want art and self defense. Krav Magna if only SD.

Brazilian is VERY good for one on one. Stick with the old style for combat style Self defense.

I forgot about Kenpo. I'll look into it.

Krav or aikido. He's going to have to find what works for him.

That's what I'm thinking. He may have to try a few different schools for a few months.

Good point. At least I'm still a better shot than him.

He's doing both. I'm very proud that martial arts has become a lifestyle for him. He has zero interest in quitting. I think he'll train for his whole life.

Teach him to play guitar Thrakk.

I would if he was interested. Truth be told, he is too impatient. I gave him my Ovation Legend. But it just sits. Sort of like my strat. Sits there and stares at me.

Krav maga is incredibly effective. None of it is about subtle containment. I'm a huge fan of wing chun and jeet kun do, but it's pretty rare to find a place to learn it.

How did I know you would suggest that?

Do you train with any kids?

How did I know you would suggest that?

Do you train with any kids?

I teach eight and sometimes nine classes a week, for children.

You know the secret to becoming effective at any martial art - Grind it out! Repetition, repetition, repetition... did I mention repetition?

Something which gets demonstrated say, once a month - won't be there when you need it. Something you practice every class - *might* be there, when the SHTF.

Pick a style known to be at least reasonably effective, and watch to see if the classes look to be very repetitive... and there you go.

A class which never seems to teach the same thing twice? You'll never be able to execute in the middle of a fight-or-flight adrenaline dump.
