View Full Version : Gamers: PS3 or X-Box

I'm not much of a gamer. The last gaming system I actually owned was an original Nintendo. I've probably got < 5 hours of time on a PS3 or X-Box.
The new Forza 4 racing game looks bad ass, but it's only available on X-Box. I guess the PS3 guys say Gran Turismo 5 is better. Who knows...
If I buy one, I'd probably do the online thing from time to time, so that would be a factor. I'd probably also keep it in my office, so the blu-ray player on the PS3 isn't a big plus since my PC has one too.
What's the advantage of one over the other?

PS3 with gt5. The ps3 is a 3d blu ray player, so just a better fit for my living room.

Lemme see...
...i bought an xbox 360 cause my gf at the time liked to play video games. Sold it after I sold her.
...bought a PS3 earlier this year to play online with friends since I had moved 3000 miles away. Played once and it's now sitting in a box since I moved back untouched for 6 months.
I suggest a chia pet. :D

Love the PS3 for it's Blu-ray capabilities, and the games are solid. Online gaming is pretty good (I've only done it a couple of times).
I'm looking to do netflix or something like that. Anybody have experience with that?

PS3 here. Never had a problem with it. Streams video great. Big plus-I'm able to connect my computer wireless to it and stream content. Every game requires a D/L to store on the HD, but that's a small price to pay. I don't play online because I don't want some 10 YO ankle biter whipping my ass.
Having a blast right now with 10 CFOT people playing GT5.
I also have NFL Sunday Ticket with the PS3.

Is GT5 just as good as Forza?
The main reason I'm thinking about getting a system is for the racing sim games. If I like it I might even go full blown dork mode and get the steering wheels and pedals. :drivingskid:

I'm too lazy to find the link, but a car magazine did a review, and found gt5 to be more realistic, but forza to be more fun for the normal user... Iirc

I hear the new Forza 4 that's coming out is supposed to be pretty nice. I'm guessing either game would be just fine.

I bought the PS3 just for GT5...and I have a wheel & pedals set.
I am a very casual player and I love it.
From what I have read, Forza has some advantages over GT5, like livery editor...but it seems to be more geared to the hard-core racer IMO. XBOX has better online features from what I have heard...but you have to pay for it. playstation online is free.
Tonight we had 17 people in the league and we had to split into two lounges. I only started online racing in December and I was 5th in the points headed into this week and in the "A" group. Finished 3rd of 9 in both races.
I do ZERO testing and tuning...and there are guys that spend hours every week. Serious.
It's pretty competitive and a lot of fun with clean racing in the "league" races...then after those are done the gloves come off for some short sprint races.
Yup, I'm a dork...but it's a lot of fun.
Someone posted this the other day.

G27 is a pretty nice wheel & pedal set.
I paid about that much for a lesser product.

Is the clutch/shifting action realistic with the wheel & pedal setups? I've only used the wheel.
Do you think the sim games improve your driving skills (brake points, lines, etc...) or just improve your video game skills?

Have both and the Wii. Haven't turned on the XBox on in over a year. Make that two for the Wii.
PS3 does everything. I even stream movies to it.
XBOX 360 is the superior gaming platform.
PS3 is better multi-media.
I don't need multimedia. I have everything the cable company offers and bought a Blu Ray player to go with my XBOX. Not the greatest gamer in the world, but a gamer nonetheless. Gamers go with XBOX.
Forza > GT
Halo/Gears of War > Uncharted/God of War
XBOX Live > PSN
etc., etc., etc.

Several of the guys in the league do some road racing and I have heard about it helping with the braking points...but I really don't know if it would help real-world racing wise. I've heard about pro drivers playing the games to get them up to speed on a new track before getting there, but I have never been on a road course personally.
I have the wheel set that is a step down from the one I posted and the shifter is just an up-down stick that is mounted to the wheel. I use the paddle shifter that is on the steering wheel...and there is no clutch pedal.
The G27 set-up that I posted has a clutch pedal and it seems to be pretty popular in the league. There are even nicer set-ups, but I don't know what they cost.
Serious...I look forward to Tuesday nights for the racing.
Oh, and I have NFL Sunday Ticket on the PS3 too.
Can't do that with XBOX.

One other CRITICAL difference, PS3 on line gaming experience is free.

Correct. Things like a CFOT or VBOT race night sound cool, but getting my ass handed to me by kids who play 10+ hours a day doesn't sound like fun.

When they talk sh*t, just find out their address and shoot them in the leg.

We race at 7:30 on Tuesdays and I turn the machine on at 6:30 and put in a few practice laps and get familiar with the track.
I ran some random online races a couple weeks ago for the first time since February. It's a lot of fun when you have people that are around the same skill level. :yesnod:
