View Full Version : What are the little "buttons" on bumper covers for?

Mainly the rear plastic bumper cover. All of them seem to have little circle thingies in them that resemble a button. Doesn't look like they pop off. My car has one on the front cover to remove and insert a tow hook, but I see no purpose for the ones n the rear. Do the stylists think they look better this way? :confused5:

Ok, that makes sense. The car has that feature.

Can't speak for the OP, but the newest car I'd owned prior to 3 weeks ago is a 1996.

and BTW, there are no stupid questions only stupid answers....or nasty answers.

Why so many of them, and why are they also on the sides of the bumper cover, not just the rear end?

They're breakaway machine gun barrel plugs.

Just leave 'em there. They keep dust and bugs out of the barrels.

When you fire the machine guns, the pressure of the expanding gas blows them harmlessly out of the way; much like the plastic wadding in a shotgun shell.

You can get replacements from ACME.

Wrong. The stupid questions are the ones that don't get asked.

They are there to protect the wheels from being scratched by the pavement.

Larry, I have tried my best not to post here. You have given us so much to work with, but I just wanted to take the high road here but this last question was too much.

Just what the hell do you think they are for, push buttons to open the trunk? Places to insert a enema? Holes to hook up a ski rope?

They just did not recently appear in Mississippi. Hell, without them, you could back over your damn goat if'n you wadn't careful.

Jeeesh

First of all, we do not have any ski slopes in Mississippi, so there! Serus, why does the back-up sensor need so damn many of them? There are 3 across the back and one at each side of the bumper. Do the 5 of them compare notes? Do they argue? Are the ones destined for Mississippi a little stupider than the regular ones? My back-up warning buzzer pees on itself if I get 3' near a wall.

I forgot the damn question....

As I posted, there was no disrespect meant in my post. And I have not owned a vehicle yet w/ the sensors in the rear bumper...but I know what they are. And one would think an attorney would know this. But then I'm just a HS grad.

Actually, the Engineering Department wanted the sensors to compare notes and collaborate, but the Legal Department nixed that area for obvious reasons.

I would not say that the ones shipped to Mississippi are stupider, just say, more simple.

Our grand plan to model Mississippi after Alabama was a failure, wasn't it?
