View Full Version : Anyone had their Uvula removed?

Just curious.
After my camping trip last month I was told by the people there, that I would stop breathing and then gasp for air many times in an hour.
I can't sleep on my back because if I do, I snore a lot louder, and I wake up with an inflamed uvula thats 3-4 times as big as normal. Takes half a day for it to go back to normal and for me to be able to eat or talk without choking on it.

Try sleeping on your side. Consider getting checked for sleep apnea.

Apparently it is. I will not sleep with anything attached to my face unless it's female.

I do but sometimes wake up on my back.

Thank you kind sir! :slap:

:iagree: You need a sleep study and to work with a doctor that can determine the best plan of care for you. Don't wait because if you have been doing this for a long time you could already have heart damage as well as other health problems. Get ye to ze doctor... btw if you do have a sleep study wear really cute pair of undies.... the sleep lab techs really love it.

Bah, heart damage.
I'm sure it's already phucked. It beats abnormally all the time. Sometimes I can feel it skip a beat or 2 and then it comes back hitting hard.
I know if I go to a doctor it will be the same as always, blood tests wil be fine, I will be told to lose weight and quit smoking.
As for the undies, I will keep that in mind. :slap:

Take it from one who knows; you have the symptoms of sleep apnea. Your uvula is probably getting red and swollen because your snoring is causing it to be beaten against the roof of your mouth. I bet you feel tired most of the time. That is from not getting a good nights sleep. When you have to gasp for air you partially wake but not enough that you may not remember waking and never really get into what is called REM sleep. If you have been doing this for long, you have probably already done damage to your heart. A CPAP or BPAP is in your future if you want to have much of a future.
Have you tried a Pure Sleep mouth guard? They work pretty well for me.

Hey Mike, I suffer from sleep apnea as well and a swollen Uvula is not a symptom of it, but the cause of it. Weak muscles around it and excess neck fat (it's not only on the outside) make the Uvula get in the way of the air passages resulting in labored breathing and snoring, and the little Uvula getting beat up and swollen. That causes the body to "take a break" once in a while, and stop breathing. :ack:
And that results in all kinds of crap like high blood pressure, oxygen deficiency in the extremities (tingling feet), blah, blah.
Two effective ways to deal with it are a mouthpiece kinda like a hockey teeth guard, which makes your jaw stay in a more forward position, thus opening the air passages, and a small operation that inserts a nylon rod into the Uvula to make it stiff, haha!
Or, you could just lose weight!

Look Jackass enough of the fluff... you want to end up in a pine box like Reggie White? I don't want to hear of another forum members senseless death especially one that can be prevented. So, get off your fat ass and call a doctor and do what you have to do to take care of yourself. We only get one ride on this merrygoround and dying early because you are too stupid to see a doctor is pathetic.
Oh and please do wear clean undies when going to the doc and moreso when you do the sleep study... we have to have something to look at while you sleep.... :leaving:

:iagree: with hottie.
About 10 years ago I shed 150 pounds because high blood pressure and sleep apnea we're literally killing me. But even after I got in shape I was still gagging to death in my sleep. So like MEC5Lady said, go get a sleep study and they'll show you how f'd up your sleep likely is.
Then, instead of letting a surgeon hack away at your insides, look into a laser shrinking of the tissue. I had my uvula and soft palette shrunk with a laser in a procedure that was nearly outpatient. Your throat will be sore as shit for a few days but you'll be fully functional otherwise. I pitied the other folks who were in the doctors waiting room for their follow up visit. The ones who had the surgery looked like they called Mike Tyson a sissy with all the swelling and redness.
Check it out, it'll make such a difference in how rested you feel when you wake up you will not believe it. :)

Jokes aside Mike, you won't like it when the nerves in your feet die off from lack of oxygen, and you can't feel anything anymore, which is one step away from diabetes, and possible amputation from nectrotizing tissue damage.:ack:

I checked out that mouth guard.
It says that the device moves your bottom jaw forward.
I don't think it would make much difference for me as I already have a severe under bite.
I can't even put my bottom teeth behind my front teeth.

I had my sleep test almost 10 years ago, and it scared the crap out of me. My breathing would stop 30 times an HOUR! Severe Apnea. I'd start kicking one leg to get going again, almost like kick starting a motorcyle!
I lost 75lbs and it's much better, still about 35 to go.

:iagree::yesnod: Same here. Had one for almost ten years now. I sleep deeper and feel much better, and it eliminates the snoring. The VERY LOUD snoring was the reason I did a sleep study. I'd wake myself up at times. It was discovered I had apnea, and that's why I was always tired. I woke up many times during the night. Never all the way, just enough to disturb my sleep. Once you get used to it you'll feel much better.:D
