Finally getting around to clean up some of the damage from Irene this past weekend. We got hit hard in our town, as we do every disaster it seems,
We left on Friday to go to Mass to visit with friends and get a small vacation in, after preparing the outside of the house (patio furniture, gutters extended, etc) we ended up losing power, and within and hour - hour and half, our battery backup failed on the primary sump pump (we have two).
We got a call from our neighbor @ 1AM telling us we have about a foot of water in the basement, ended up getting about 2.5 - 3' in total. Not much we could do as we were 300 miles north, and really didn't want to risk driving south into the storm with 2 little ones.
Getting home on Monday, we still had no power - ended up coming on around 5:30 (about an hour after we were home) which actually was better as nothing shorted out. Our neighbor did get the water out on Sunday via a generator.
Well, been slowly cleaning up and dealing with the waterproofing company (their backup failed) and the insurance company ( they never added the sump pump rider to our Homeowner's even though i emailed them back in 2008. Last night i hit the two totes that had our DVD collection, almost all destroyed ( 400+ DVD cases destroyed, most the extended edition or box sets) and all my Pez collection (close to 200 Pez I started collecting in the 90's ) gone, along with all of our oldest daughters "artwork" and clothes we we saving for our youngest.
God damn this sucks! :(
