View Full Version : Guns and Coyotes
So this morning, as i'm getting my shower, Mrs. DAB comes in and says that she thinks she just saw a coyote on the path between the house and my shop. i ask, is the dog inside? yep. good, i can finish my shower.
get all done, coyote is long gone, walk around the house, no sign of critter, keep doggie inside for another 90 minutes.
decide today is a good day to try out my new holster my BIL gave me a few weeks ago. so i grab it, my commander, a magazine of ammo, and put it on, about the 4 o'clock position and wear it for the remainder of the day.
as i head to the shop for the first time, i see on one of the paver stones in the path a different poop, not doggie's poop...hmmmm....bet it's coyote poop. so that's confirmation.
thankfully, NM is an open carry state, so no permit as long as the gun is visible, will pursue a concealed carry permit this winter.
always something going on around here. :yesnod::yesnod:

Cool story!
Nice choice of caliber, too. Get that concealed permit and carry, carry, carry!

Any roadrunners nearby?
Wile E. Coyote finally gets the Road Runner - YouTube
some quick checking: no bounty of wile e. coyote, but you can shoot on sight, no permit needed.
however, you may not discharge a firearm within 150 yards of an occupied dwelling (that's a house all you CF snoopers), and since my neighbor is less than that distance from us, probably not a good idea to go popping wile e. from the front porch.

Sounds like Seth MacFarlane doing some of the voiceovers.

If you're a good shot, your neighbors and their pets will thank you. Coyotes are hell on domestic pets.

i'm a fair shot.

think i'll go on google earth, check the distances, and get permission from neighbors. Mrs. DAB tells me that the neighbor lost her cat, to a coyote she thinks. bet she grants permission.
just checked google earth, nearest neighbor is about 140 yards south, over a rise. i'll give her a call and draw up a short permission slip. memories fade, signed documents don't.

Make sure you present your plan in a way that she'll accept. "My wife saw a coyote on out property yesterday morning and since you suspect that one got your cat, I'd like to permission to eliminate the problem"
Something like that :D

That's one of their favorite meals. Also, you better be a great shot with a pistol. Coyotes are like hunting turkeys. They will see you and any movement LONG before you see them. You need a good varmint rifle and an electronic game call. A young deer distress call is very effective. Put a little distance between you and the call. They almost cannot resist the distress call of a young deer. 22/250 is a good Coyote rifle. Hornady ceramic hollow points are most effective. We hunt them anytime we can because they run deer off in a hurry. I got two last deer season with my 7mm Mag. One of them was right at 425 yards.
Our terrain is pretty rugged and rolling. Likely longest shot on the property would be about 50 yards.
Not going to chase Wile E. But if we cross paths and I'm armed, he'll get shot at.

Damn right she'll give you permission. An AR15 with a good scope will cure any coyote problems. One of the reasons I bought one. That and Zombies. Never can be too prepared.

Might know where a S&W 5.56mm MP-15 with a 3-9x scope is located. Thanks for the reminder.

The 5.56 is a good round too. But at distance, you can't beat 22/250 for varmints.
