I've been driving GM and Toyota pick ups for years and am about ready to look at the Ford Diesel. I know little about this truck, other than what I read on the PowerStroke forum, which is largely pro Ford folks, so, I ask:
Does anyone have any positive/negative information about this beast? For proper context, I will not be doing any serious towing, this would be a daily driver.

Why so big if not towing?

Having driven an 06 F250 and the Chevy 2500...the Chevy rides MUCH better than the Ford. If you're looking brand new, that's a whole nother story. The New F250s' are very nice trucks. Avoid the 6.0L diesels like the plague...they just aren't worth the headache.
I wound up going the Duramax/Allison combo..much better ride/feel, even my Fiancee likes driving it.
I just bought a 2011 KR w/ FX/4.
The 2012s will have limited colors available and no NAV due to the tsunami.
This is the quietest (on highway) vehicle that I have ever owned.
No smell, no mess, no black smoke.
You can tell it's a diesel on takeoff, but that's about it.
I am seeing 14 in town/17.5 on highway.
SYNC rocks and the stereo is great.
Excellent ride, but it is an F250 w/ HD suspension.
GM really didn't have anything that matched up to a King Ranch.

i have owned 3 F350's. 1 of them sucked azz (triton V10) the other 2 (diesels) were by fart he best vehicles I have ever owned.

Depends on what year?
But like above, why such a big truck for light towing?
I have a 2011 F250 Diesel, which is mostly a dd, but I need it to tow the things I occasionly do tow. As for dd, it's great, very comfortable, very nice interior, and get decent fuel mileage, ~16 in town, ~21 highway, with the 355 rear. For your needs, I would recommend a 321 rear, only optional in new trucks, and mileage will be even better, and it will still tow your light stuff with ease having 400hp and 800ft lbs of tq!!
I looked at Chevy/GMC, they ran great and have a proven drivetrain, but the interior is just so shitty on them!
Dodges are ok too, but did not seem to run as well as the Ford, and the interior was still a little shotty.
For the older trucks, the 6.4 is good, just not very fuel efficient, expect ~10mpg. Dodges are good all around, and so are the GM's, still both have crappy interior imho tho.
Here's mine...

^After about the 5th or 6th tank. First tank was around 14.5, hand calculated, next few were in the 15's, then they got up into the 16's. The one road trip I took of about 200 miles of interstate driving, I got like 21.3, hand calculated. This was all with the stock 18" wheels and tires. Not sure what I'm getting now with the 22's and 35's, but it's less.
Mine has the 3:55 rear, what does yours have?

I drove F150's for daily drivers for the past 15 years. I would still recommend that if you are not towing. However, I just purchased a used 2010 F250 SD Crew Cab and it tows our 26' camper like it's not even there. Ride is good but not as smooth as my old F150's.
Good luck on whatever you choose!

'cept the grill on the 2011 SD's > are hideous.. :ack:
And the new Ford Diesel is still too new to consider it reliable.

I want the diesel just because. Its kind of like asking some folks who dont track why a Z 06 instead of a Camero It may well be my last purchase. I live in the country and haul stuff but little towing.
I'm looking at a 2011 King Ranch. I have a pretty good deal presented, another reason for this choice

I have an F-350 crewcab dually 7.3 diesel, that motor is bullet proof ,but I would go with a manual trans. I have been through 3 autos in 280,000 miles.I tow a 35' camper with it and in the mountains is the only time I know it's back there.

Same.
It's been my experience with Fords that it takes about 1,000-2,000 miles to see good fuel economy.

Chevy doesn't... but GM does.
2500 HD Denali diesel/Allison
I have spent a lot of time in 2500/3500 diesels and as a driver (as the OP stated), there isn't anything even close to the new Denali HD IMO.

I also tried to build a Sierra Denali similar to KR and couldn't quite to do it.
I liked SYNC and the NAV much better on the Ford. I liked the overall interior better, too.
I agree with you though; it's those two and everybody else fighting for 3rd place.

Also, it is obviously 100% personal preference, but I also love the way the Denali looks compared to the Ford.

I looked at the Denali, but right now Ford wins because:
1) I have a heck of a deal on the F250, and
2) I really like the way Ford has come through the auto industry melt down.
I am looking at the factory Nav in the Ford, but have a killer system in my Tundra now. I'll probably install the amp and speakers, but use the factory head. I guess if the sound is not as good, I can always add the Kenwood (if I don't sell it)
Thanks for the input, one and all.

1) Cant beat a good deal, just wish there were a few year of proof on the new Ford Diesel.
2) Your logic is skewed here. Ford stock is way lower than GM. Ford still has tons of debt to settle.
But, with that said, I still like a Ford truck, GM fit the bill at the time I purchased mine.

Ford was the only company that didn't take the Socialist Bailout...and didn't F'k their bond holders. I know a few people that lost a good deal of money on GM investments (bonds i think) and will NEVER own, nor let their kids own another GM product as long as they live.

Ford has a lot of debt, but it's management is headed in the right direction. Their total debt declined 22.5% from '09 to '10 year end, while GM's almost doubled over the same period.
Anyway, I'm not buying the stock, I'm buying a product and appreciate Ford's not using my money as a taxpayer to stay solvent so the labor force could still make impressive wages while the company was headed into the ground.
Before I get off track and sound like I have sand in my vag, thanks for the comment and I appreciate your pointing out that the new diesel is unproven.

I think that the NAV is now in the order bank. I'll be looking to order an F250 Lariat at the start of 2012. Will be nice to tow the race trailer with something made for the purpose...

UAW workers, be it Ford, GM or whatever make the same wages.
GM borrowed the $$$ from the Government because banks did not have the $$$ to loan after the housing crises. Ford had to sell their name to get loans, but they were in trouble before the housing crises and got the money from the banks.
Billions are going to Columbia to build oil refineries for the Columbian people. IMHO, I would much rather see my tax $$$ kept here in the US to help keep American people employed.

UAW strike authorization at Ford Dearborn heads for approval, official says
David Barkholz
Automotive News | August 30, 2011 – 4:06 pm EST
UPDATED: 11:55 p.m. ET
DETROIT — A UAW local representative at Ford Motor Co.’s Dearborn Truck plant predicted that 2,500 hourly workers in his bargaining unit would overwhelmingly approve a strike authorization as part of a two-day vote that wrapped up late Tuesday.
Gary Walkowicz, a committeeman for UAW Local 600, said workers leaving the polls and on the factory floor are heavily tending toward authorization. A final count was expected to be delivered to the UAW International Wednesday, he said. Dearborn Truck makes Ford F-150 pickups.
The Dearborn workers would join employees in Louisville, Ky., who gave their leaders the authority to approve a walkout in a vote tallied Tuesday. The vote was 98.7 percent in favor, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Workers at Ford’s assembly plant near Kansas City, Mo., voted 3,049-18 to authorize a strike in voting that concluded Saturday. The Kansas City plant makes F-150s, and Escape and Escape Hybrid crossovers.
While such votes are considered a routine part of the negotiating process, Walkowicz said Ford rank-and-file workers are sending a message that they are ready to strike if the Ford/UAW contract talks fail to return “a substantial amount of concessions” made by workers in the 2007 contract and when it was reopened in 2009.
Ford declined to comment.

I really like the NaV and Sync in my Lariat...BUT, I thought the factory system blew donkey balls. I swapped out the front and rear speakers for JL C5's and an XD400/4 amp. The factory 8" sub is ok at best, but I went ahead and prewired for another amp and sub.
I just scored an SL2k box, specifically made for the Superduty's with power sliding windows, off ebay for 102.50 brand new. These boxes are around 250 new, and are made for the JL 13" flat sub.
And fwiw, I got nearly 12k off my F250 in April, so they will deal!!

Back to the King Ranch.
Questions, or owners feedback can be found here.
6.7 questions answered - Ford Truck Fanatics
If you need more info than that, I know the service manager of the Ford store in St. Robert, Mo. Or the service manager right up the road here.
Bottom line- not much to tell on the 6.7. No serious issues, but not a mod-friendly motor (like the other new diesels). Owners seem to be reporting 20-21 mpg on trips (not towing).
Who ever posted King Ranch/Denali... and everyone else is second best has it exactly right.

My neighbor at the shore has a 6.4L Powerstroke and loves it.... in fact he is thinking about stepping up to the new 6.7L. He also said that they get really good MPG on the highway compared to his 6.4L.
He is a Ford guy, and owns an operating engineering company. all of his pickups are ford. He either has the older 7.3L power strokes or 6.4Ls and one 6.0L which has given him no problem.
The 6.7s are very mod friendly...if ya don't mind voiding warranty! I don't think they are getting quite the numbers they did outta the 6.4s, but they are still really good. I remember seeing a spartan tuned 6.7 with dpf delete that was around 500 at the wheels and over 800 tq at the wheels. Stock they are around 300/600 at the wheels

Depends what you call "mod friendly." There have been a host of driveability issues related to installed tuners already, I'm told, and none have an easy solution. Most are caused by new IQA numbers not being programmed into the pcm. Rough running and poor idle have been common issues, along with the pcm limiting speeds to 55 mph and attempting to de-rate power. Again, others show no symptoms at all.
