BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - One man faces DWI and other traffic-related charges and another is in the hospital in critical condition after he was hit by a car while sitting on a porch early Thursday morning.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Marcus Hayes, 34, of Baton Rouge lost control of his car in the 1900 block of North Acadian Throughway East around 2:20 a.m.

Investigators said the 1999 Lincoln Town car he was driving first veered off the road and hit a light pole, which broke and ripped down the power lines attached to it. Two other poles were pulled down by the wires.

Police said the car then hit a fence and kept going, slamming into a man sitting on the porch of a home next door. The car didn't stop there and hit another fence, causing it to spin and eventually stop.

The man who was on the porch was not identified. He was found lying on the ground. He was taken to an area hospital. Officers said both of his legs were badly injured and may have to be amputated.

He also suffered internal injuries, but the extent of those are unknown. Police warned the victim's condition could possibly worsen.

Authorities said Hayes blew a .09 blood alcohol content. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on the following charges:

DWI

First-degree negligent injuring

Reckless operation

Failure to maintain control

Suspended driver's license

No insurance

Police added charges could be upgraded. The wreck is still being investigated.

The section of North Acadian East between Washington Avenue and Fairfields Avenue was closed until about 10 a.m.
