So i go to the 'local' (it's in Albuquerque, 60 miles south of me) lumber yard to pick up some cherry and walnut boards for my next projects. go to pay for what i got, and the clerk asks if i have a company (no, see yesterday's thread), or am a member of a woodworking group (uh, no, i'm not big on joining clubs). he mentions that he offers discounts if i was a member, and gives me the name of the local club to check out when i get home.

ok....go to Google, type in name of group, surf thru their terrible website, learn that one year's membership is $35 (hmmm...recurring number this week), and the discounts are 5-10%, depending on what you buy....

if i bought $1000 of stuff, 5% would be $50, and i'd be ahead of my due's cost....that's a lot of lumber, so i think i'll pass.

$35 buys a fair amount of sanding disks and sanding belts....and i can do something with them.

Doug, it just so happens that the Rough And Tough Woodworkers of NW FL and NM is having its inaugural membership drive.

The cost is $1 barn buck, to be transferred to anyone other than Sea Six.

Now you're in the club.

I used to be a member of the American Rollercoaster Riders Association. I still have a card somewhere that I can send you if it'll help.

Fortunately, I don't travel much anymore. But when I did, I'd usually park at D/FW in what is known as the Remote South lot. 7 bucks a day, and a free shuttle brings you to your terminal. The "drivers" of these shuttles got into a racket where they'd help people load their luggage on to the shuttle. By this I mean they would grab the bag and literally walk two steps and throw the bag on the rack.

Then they'd sit there and wait for a tip! I'd always wave them off saying "I've got my bags" not because I'm cheap....I'm happy to tip well for good service. But this is ridiculous. It isn't like these guys are Skycaps. And I usually had one bag anyway.

It's like picking up a pizza from the local take out and having them put a tip line on the bill, or having a tip jar at the local Starbucks.

i don't mind paying for something that's worthwhile (like my barn stall), but $35 for joining a 'club' that meets once a month, 60 miles away, so i might get a small discount from a lumber yard? pass. i'm pretty clever, i can figure out design and joinery on my own.
