Loco Vette

so how exactly does something like that happen?

Complacency. The conductor (guy on the ground) has a radio ritual he is supposed to go through every time they initiate a move that goes like this:

"Conductor on the KXHR 102 to engineer on the 102, switch is lined for your move, points are double checked, derail is off and double checked, you are clear to shove ahead for ___ car lengths."

Obviously he either didn't do the ritual and just said something like "C'mon back there 102" or just recited the mantra without actually doing the steps involved, and ran over the derail.

Nope. 3 day suspension without pay and 6 month's probation. If I fired him I would have to start all over again with a new guy who would be more likely to do the same thing. That is this guy's first whoopsie, and I bet he learns from it.

Track is actually not damaged all that much. We'll probably get out of this for under $10k if we don't have to use a crane.

Did you have one of those devices on the rail, or is that little bit of track it ??

Ohhh... Now I'm beginning to understand... (your jargon fooled us a bit :D ).

That's a "derail", not a "derailment" (but end result is sorta the same).
The "derail" has been there for 10 years. The "derailment" happened just recently.

DINGDINGDING we have a winner.

Derails are in place to keep the cars that were behind me when I took the shot in the OP from rolling God-only-knows how far (seen UNSTOPPABLE?) if they get loose from the customer. You have to take them down before you go up the siding on purpose though.

He should be able to gloss over the derail maintenance procedure. He is certain that they work.

I coulda stopped UNSTOPPABLE. Just cut out a 20' section of rail. Big mess tho.

I know NOTHING about railroading and thought the exact same thing.

Here was my simple question...

When they tried to slow it down and use the helo to drop a guy, wouldn't it have been just a bit easier to hop over to the runaway one from the one they were using to slow it down?

Match the speed and there ya go. Not exactly rocket surgery.

Still an entertaining flick though.

The "After" picture:http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc125/LocoVette/after.jpg

Car was rerailed after being emptied in the usual fashion. Couple of thousand dollar's damage to the car, couple thousand in labor, 6 new crossties, a new derail, and I am gonna have the contractor fix a nearby low spot in the track while he is there. Should come in under $10k. Expensive for a momentary not-paying-attention moment though.
