I was reading a post on another board that talked about this question in a way.

Do you carry a company cell phone? If you do, are you expected to answer/monitor it 24/7?

I'm one of the rare IT guys who doesn't carry a company phone. I'm also not on call 24/7.

If my company needs to reach me during my time off, that sort of implies they would expect me to be sober. This is not a realistic expectation.:D

My boss knows that if he calls me on the weekend there is a good chance I may have already had a drink or six depending on the time of day

I've been following that thread at Disney. The doucheness in that thread is monumental. :yesnod:

I have a personal cell / Android Pro and the firm reimburses about 80% of the cost. I use this as my home, personal, and work cell...with access to work email. I have no other phone.

I answer apparently work-related calls 24 hours per day; however, such calls rarely come outside of regular business hours unless my client is in another country. Either way, I answer it.

Yes, both. :yesnod: I had a company cell/Blackberry for 4 years. Boss never abused it and if I got a call when I was off I always figured it must be important. I was asked to work on Sundays and my days off....it never counted against me if I said no and there were times I wanted the work. :yesnod:

I have a company-provided Blackberry. I'm not expected to pick up every time it rings, but I am expected to check it occasionally, check VM, check email. Have too many international customers, colleagues and such to be able to turn it off and ignore it for 48 hours.

I left it at home today when I took a little 4-hour trip to visit with my parents, and when I got back I had a couple of emails from a colleague in Nanjing - a very hard-working guy who I suspect, sleeps maybe 3 hours a day...
