My Ford explorer has 106k miles on it. Runs pretty good. But the OD light is flashing now which means transmission issues. I'm trying to decide if I should get rid of it or ?..
I think I could get a decent, used SUV with 30-50k miles on it for $15K.
Delusional?
Make/model recommendations?
On the other hand, if I had to spend 1K on the trans, I'm up $14k...
What are your uses for the SUV? :waiting:

If you like the vehicle, fix the trans. Much cheaper.

We go on expeditions hauling family and camera gear. And dogs.

That's sort of what I'm thinking. I paid $14k for it in 2005. V8, class three tow package, full on options (Limited model).
We've about fixed everything. Regular oil changes Mobile1...
Has a little valve chatter but otherwise good. Gozar farted on the drivers seat causing a small rip but the stink is gone.
I'm thinking worst case scenario, we get a junkyard trans if it's shot. Even the motor could be replaced this way and I'm not out of pocket as much as a new vehicle.
I suck at gambling though...

Cross your fingers and have the trans backflushed for less than $100.
I've personally never had any luck with this technique.

With only 106k, I'd just get it fixed. Even if costs you a couple of grand to get the transmission rebuilt, you'll still be money ahead.

I'm having a hard time seeing how this is gambling. Are there any known issues that would make you think you're gonna get hosed anytime soon?

Well...my whole life history points to HOSED.
Other than that, not really.
Fix that one and get another as backup? :leaving:
