do they scare the crap out of you?

I don't get them often, but I've had a dozen or so in the last decade.

had one last night. I was sleeping on my back, and I woke up, unable to move. It was hard to breathe at first (I think that's what woke me), but that lasted very briefly (less than a second) and then it felt like I was sinking into my bed, which just felt... odd.
a moment later, the odd feeling was replaced with one of sheer terror. Something was in the room. out of the corner ot my eye, I could see what appeared to be a black mass in the doorway to my bedroom, and I could feel the evil coming from it. It wanted to do me harm... then it moved towards me.

And just as suddenly, the sensations all went away and my body was "awake".

I rolled over and woke up my wife... she said she didn't notice anything and had been asleep.

I know it's just my mind messing with me, but it still bothers me.

I used to have it all the time when I smoked a lot of pot. Dead serious. It always hgappened when I slept on my back when I was really zooted. Couldn't breath, couldn't move. i could bat an eyelash and eventually, after a struggle, rouse myself awake. Scary as shit.

The only paralysis I would experience from that would be that I was so hard I didn't have enough skin left to blink.

I've only had it happen twice that I can remember. last time I was frozen, in the bed, but could hear foot steps really loud stomping towards the bedroom then rush into the room. I managed to wake up just as they where coming in. Horrible feeling, being conscious but not being able to move, and your mind f'ing with ya.

I used to have it fairly regularly...
Still have it occasionally, but not like I used to...thankfully.

Old Hag syndrome.

Not in a long time, but I've had them. The clinical term is hypnagogic hallucinations or "hypnagogia."

Not since I was a kid. Used to have them all the time.
Now, I guess I have the opposite.
Sometimes if I'm touched when asleep, I come up swinging.

I recall times riding in the station wagon to church I would be totally aware of what is going on around me, but unable to move. Makes a young child panicky.

I've had the same kind of experiences many times. It’s not the mind f’ing with you it is you being on a different spiritual plane kind of like an outer body experience. There are thinks out there that will do you major harm while on these journeys. Our spirits are more than capable of traveling while the physical body rest.

My spirit must be lazy because it didn't move from the bed. :sadangel:

I remember one time laying in the back seat sleeping while on the way to work and being completely aware of everything but not being able to move or say anything. No evil spirits coming after me, just the sound of the car and the radio. My theory is the body needs sleep but the mind has enough.

Only had that a couple of times but it’s very scary. Why do you think people have heart attacks in the middle of the night?

I also used to get what was called night terrors when I was younger. They can bring terror to a new level.

The last one of those I had was back about 1972. We were married for about two years and I was dead tired and went to bed earlier than usual. My wife decided to stay up and watch an uncut movie showing on the then new HBO.

I was having a very vivid, scary dream and unknown to me my wife hear me yelling and groaning and twisting violently around and came in the bedroom. She told me that I started yelling louder and then bolted out of bed taking sheet and blanket and landing on my feet on the floor by the end of the bed. Then I instantly came wide awake. It must have happened as she said because there I was standing with sheet and blanket twisted around me.

How I did this without getting hurt I have not a clue. At that long ago time I was in good shape and rather athletic but how I could literally leap straight out of bed and hit my feet and stay standing has still got me baffled. By chance I had a regular Docs visit scheduled for a few days later and I talked this over with the doctor. He told me not to worry unless this happened a lot!

Fortunately I have not had any more incidents like those reported above since and I sure hope it remains that way.

I think it's more of a dream thing and the fact your body produces chemicals when you sleep to keep you from acting out and your concious mind treats this as a paralyzing effect as your concious and unconcious minds duke it out in a semi-concious reality.

Or something.

Impossible. Ever since the War of the Planes, our immortal souls have been chained to our mortal bodies with the diamond ribbon of Ackabar. Only the Silver sword of the Githzari is capable of severing the ribbon.
The sword is wielded by the great Astral Dragon, Durtholamon, and I seriously doubt you were able to kill Durtholamon.

It's happened a few times to me, always when someone I know dies. And usually I know exactly who it is, like my grandfather sat on my bed and I couldn't move, next day I found out he passed away the night before! It's like they come to say goodbye. Once it scared me enough to get up, turn all the lights on and check for burglars! :willy:

I know right where you are coming from Robbie.

There is a lot more going on in this world than what we see.
